When I booked the Hotel de la Porte Doree, it was ranked #165. As it steadily moved up in the rankings to #116, I knew we had made the right choice. This hotel was exactly what we wanted for the price we paid. If money is no object, stay in the 1st or 2nd arrondisements and walk out of the hotel and into the Louvre entrance. But for the budget minded traveller- this fit the bill. Quick and easy metro access. Good breakfast for 10 euro. Friendly staff- especially liked Jodi- always helpful and going the extra mile to assist with shuttle, advice, etc. The rooms are a little small but cozy and have all the room you need unless you are throwing a party in your room. We had the smallest room in the hotel ( or so it appeared after peeking into other empty rooms) and we were fine with it. Soft beds, great towels, good linen, wake up calls on time, and a double window that let in the night air if we were tired of the A/C which was nice also.
The Metro is a great people watching affair. We enjoyed our Metro time and it gave us time to talk, plan our day or rest our sore feet. There were convenient bakeries all up and down the street in front of the hotel and many good restaurants. A bonus was the park with the lake. We LOVED it and it gave us a great place to relax and unwind in the middle of a 10 day trip to regroup and not be in the hustle and bustle of tourism.
One of the things that was our favorite tour in Paris was the Chateaux Tour in the Loire Valley. We really liked the old castles and the drive through the French countryside..... the Giverny and Versailles tour was great also.
All in all, no complaints with the hotel. The previous reviews were pretty much right on. Doubt we will ever be back to Paris, too many other places in the world to see, but would definitely recommend it to others. Should be a 3 star and not a 2- hope they correct that soon. Merci......
