My girlfriend and I were ending a trip that had started in Monaco, gone through Positano, Capri and Rome and we were on our last night in Europe looking for somewhere close to the Pont des Arts so that we could put our lock on the bridge before we left town. We were wandering the Latin Quarter and pulled up TripAdvisor and the top rated place in the area was Grains Nobles.
We were sat immediately without reservation and given a light rosé to enjoy while we waited; gratis. While my girlfriend selected something herself off the menu, a tuna tartare I believe, I (always the more adventurous when it comes to cuisine) chose the surprise course menu which was quite literally labeled as such, a surprise, and surprise they did. If I remember correctly it was 4 courses of appetizer, entree, cheese and dessert. The young man who seated us, and took our order also played sommelier as the course meal included a wine pairing with each course. Every course and wine was perfect. He clearly knew what he was doing as I have never had wine that complemented my food so well and so consistently. Each pairing was perfection.
I can't even for the life of me remember the dishes, just the ecstatic response to each one. They were light and cheerful with such crisp definable flavors and then all really was settled and filled with the cheese plate...... AND THE DESSERT WINE! I had never had a sweet white dessert wine that I could palate let alone enjoy and let me just tell you that the young man serving us could have told me the wine WAS the dessert and I wouldn't have argued. Needless to say it came with some tiny tasty pastries/tarts/etc. that just plain old hit-the-spot.
Then of course how could you not love that as the last customers are leaving he came out and offered us both a glass of champagne on the house to enjoy. Oh and then when we bought a bottle to take with us to put our lock on the bridge, he even made sure we took 2 of their glasses with us because we hadn't thought that far ahead when buying the bottle.
We walked into the restaurant with a slight trepidation that our last meal would not match the rest, that we would be disappointed. We walked out in love with the restaurant and people that had provided the best meal of the whole trip and that's including everything from a 1000 euro meal at Louis XIV in Monaco to pasta/pizza/fish in Italy to some wonderful meals around Paris with some friends of ours who live there and knew where to take us. Did I mention it was all (minus the separate bottle of wine after the meal) about 100 euro. What a price for what was maybe 10 glasses of wine/champagne and 6 or 7 dishes between us.
This place will always be fond to us. How special did they make that night and that moment on the bridge for us? I'll never be able to describe it. Thank you Grains Nobles.
