“Cozy hotel with an excellent location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

We booked a room at this hotel for 5 nights based on the reviews we read here.

Arrival/Check-in

We arrived pretty early in the morning after an overnight flight, and our room was not ready. This is to be expected at a popular hotel. The front desk lady was very helpful, and showed us where to store our bags, and gave us a map and told us how to get to the RER as we had plans to visit the palace at Versailles for the day. When we returned around 3pm, the room was ready and we made our way up for a much needed nap.

The room

Our room was a Standard Double Bath room, which fit our needs just fine. The room had a double bed, a normal sized bathroom, and a built in closet/wardrobe tucked away in the corner. The windows looked out over the courtyard, and were open due the unseasonable warmth. It was a little bit noisy, but neither that nor the weather was much of a bother. There is a small refrigerator and a safe in the TV cabinet, which is always nice. As others have mentioned, the TV has about 3 or 4 dedicated English channels, but you can randomly find reruns of CSI and USA network shows (in English) on the French channels. We didn't watch that much TV, but it is kind of nice to have while doing a bit of relaxing after a long day of walking the city and getting ready for dinner. As mentioned above, the bathroom was a pretty good size for a small European hotel. However, I found it odd that the toiletries provided include shower gel, but no washcloths. A tiny bar of soap is also provided. We got clean, somehow. Also, the bathtub is kind of oddly shaped such that it looks normal-sized, but the area that you are actually able to stand in (i.e., not sloped) is quite small.

Location

The location is unbeatable. It is in a quiet area near a few embassies and government buildings. There is a small supermarket (I would call it a convenience store here in the US) across the street and a BNP Paribas bank with an ATM on the corner (this was nice because, as a Bank of America customer, there are no ATM or currency fees for using this brand of ATM). The hotel is about a half hour walk to the island with Notre Dame cathedral, and about 20 minutes to the Eiffel Tower. It is about 10 minutes to the RER and about 5 to the nearest metro. We pretty much walked everywhere.

Breakfast

Breakfast is not included, and costs 11 euros per person. It tastes fine and includes coffee, very pulpy orange juice, croissants, bread, and an assortment of butter and jelly. The only reason we did get the breakfast one morning is because everything nearby appeared to be closed on sunday morning. On other days, the places nearby can provide a similar meal for significantly less money.

Staff

The staff was always friendly and almost always manning their position at the front desk. This is one of those hotels where you return your key when you leave and get it back when you come back. Nothing wrong with that, just mentioning it. We never had to wait for somebody to give us our key, but we did have to leave it at the unattended desk once or twice.

Overall

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel de Varenne, and would recommend it to anybody looking for a adequately-appointed, conveniently-located, and budget-friendly hotel in Paris.

We spent two weeks on the rivers of France and finished our vacation with two nights at the Hotel de Varenne. It is a lovely boutique hotel in the 7th arrondissement, a perfect location from which to explore Paris for two days. We arrived early on a Sunday morning, knowing check in was much later. The very courteous gentleman at the desk promised a room would be ready at 11:30AM, so we set out to walk the neighborhood. We returned at 11AM planning to enjoy a coffee and found our room ready, and what a room it was. We overlooked the beautiful courtyard, in a quiet very beautifully appointed room. While we had chosen this hotel in part because of its proximity to the Metro, we found we could easily walk to many of the places we wanted to explore. And if you are fortunate enough to also enjoy this hotel, don't miss the charming bistro down the street, Le Sac a Dos, a recommendation from the hotel and it was all they promised and more. We will definitely be back!

We loved this hotel. It was a small boutique hotel but it was ideally located just around the corner from the Rodin museum and the metro. The room was quiet and clean and the staff were very helpful and accommodating. We used the metro but discovered that we could walk to many of the things we wanted to see. There is a wonderful bakery nearby and an excellent Italian restaurant that is also in the same block as the hotel.

This was a exqisite week end in Paris.
From the moment we arrived we knew we had made the right choice.
Our taxi driver, who drove us from the airport, knew the hotel and told us we'll be happy with it.
He was right, we had a warm welcome at the reception by a perfect english speaking lady.
Our room was ready and we were in with no delay.
We chose a superior room on the courtyard side. The decoration is superb and comfort premium. Perfectly clean and very quiet.
The location is second to none, this was easy to reach the touristic spots by foot and a metro stop is close by.
We went to the Louvre and the Eiffel tower by foot in 20 minutes.
During our stay the entire staff had a friendly and professional behaviour.
Contrary to the previous reviewer we say a big YES to this hotel and congratulations for the good job.

We stayed at the Hotel for 3 nights at the end of our France vacation in October 2012. The hotel was very clean and very comfortable and a really excellent value. Good bed, good clean bathroom with a stand up shower and not the giant tubs that require you to climb in. This is at the low end of the scale price wise so we didn;t have unrealistic expectations. The room was small as was the hotel itself but more than servicable. The continental breakfast ( coffee, baguettes, croissants and pain au chocoate) was an excellent value and was delicious. Tiny elevator but big enough for 2 people. It did take 2 trips to get the luggage up but that was no big deal. The location was excellent as well - just about 4 blocks to the Musee D'Orsay and St Germain Des Pres. During our trip to Paris and France, we did part of it with a very pricey tour. They put us in the "best" hotels like the Scribe. Although they were more luxurious, they were 5 times the price and it did;t matter one bit. If you are going to paris to stay in the hotel room, then why bother going at all. Finally, I ended up leaving my cell phone in the room and when I called the gentlemen at the front desk was already aware of it and got it to the post office immediately. I got it back safe and sound just a few days later and they didn;t charge me anything. I would recommend this hotel to anyone as long as they weren;t stuck up on "fancy".

I didn't want to review this hotel and was going to leave it up too my wife, only because I'm not as level headed as she is, and I love doing the reviews! So here we go, we too chose this hotel based on the reviews apparent great location and service, but experienced none of those. This was our last stop on a two week trip too Europe and it left a bad taste in my mouth for sure. First off the pictures of the hotel rooms are a little misleading especially in our case a room with a sloped ceiling that I hit my head on more than once. Check in was the semi high point at first we were told our room was not ready then suddenly it was ready, at least the man took our bags up too the room for us, told you a semi high point. After that it was mediocre at best, I needed a new wifi code (sorry I miss placed it) and was greeted with a distinct huff from the front desk "clerk"? Also too that topic we were also not told that our front desk key was to be turned in when you come and go from hotel which we had done at hotels in Italy, and something we would have been fine with but again we were treated with some sort of annoyance when we were informed of it, finally at the end of our trip. The location for my books is too far away from things, it's a bit of a hike to many places, I personally would prefer too be located in the busy parts, it's in a very quiet part of Paris but if you like that then it might work for you. Also if you don't like being greeted with a smile much or for that matter anybody at the desk, if you enjoy coming back too your room and finding your door completely unlocked and basically open, then this place might be for you. Really you leave my door unlocked and you don't make a point of apologizing at the end of our stay for this. So as you can tell, personally I would say no to this hotel, also please say no to the "friendly fruit stand" next door not so friendly, is anybody friendly? Hey loved the Eiffel Tower, the architecture, cool looking city, Hard Rock Cafe was fun!

Room Tip: Not really sure? We thought our room was going too be fine, we booked it months back it was our trip...

Dear Sir,

Thank you for taking time to send a review about our hotel.
I am so sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us.
I was the man at the reception when you arrived. Sorry but I didn't tell you your room wasn't ready. I told you I was going to have a look if the room was ready and cleaned for you. I took your luggage up and came back to inform you that it was ready. You forgot to mention it was around 11 a.m. Honestly did you experience many times in hotels to have your room ready upon arrival at this time in the morning, specially when the hotel was fully booked the day before ?
Then I gave you the code for the wifi. You lost it, no problem. We give you another one. This is not our habit to greet our distinguished guests with a "huff" for such a litte service as giving a simple piece of paper.
WE ARE HERE FOR YOU, FOR YOUR COMFORT AND TO SERVE YOU AT ANY MOMENT AND IN ANY OCCASION. This is the way we like to treat our guests and this is the reason why we are greated with that high rating on this website.
You also mention the problem with your room not beeing closed when you came back. I really don't understand how it could happen. We have automatic door closer in each room for fire security purpose. This is compulsory according to fire security regulations. How can it be opened ? The only moment the room doors are opened is when the chamber maids clean them !
Why didn't you alert the reception? I inquired about this problem and nobody in charge of the reception had such a complaint these past weeks ! Anyway I would like to apologise about that.
Concerning the fact that you were asked at the end of your stay to leave the key at the reception desk when you go out. From now we will clearly indicate upon arrival to leave the key at the reception desk when you go out.
You indicate that you only had 3 channels in english in your room. In fact we do have 6 different channels in english. It's true that they are all information ones. We are working on it to propose different programs in english including movies. This will be solved soon.
Finally you mention that our location is " too far away from things ", which things ?
We are next to the Musée Rodin, 5 min. walk from the Invalides, 10 min.from Grand and Petit Palais, 20 min. walk from Musée d'Orsay, the Eiffel Tower is reachable by bus or métro in 10 minutes. Tell me that you did not enjoy one of the most prestigious and expensive area of Paris, ok, but not that we are away from things ! Yes we are in a quiet area and you may prefer more animation, I understand that. But it goes with the tranquility and security of our clientèle.
Should we have the opportunity to have the pleasure of meeting you on your next trip to Paris, we will do our utmost to ensure that you receive the expected service.

Best regards.

We spent a week there and enjoyed every single day.
The staff is courteous and always willing to help and please.
The location is second to none, just next to Musée Rodin and Invalides, with a convenient metro stop nearby.
Our room was of good size and extremely comfortable, with nice toiletries from Azzaro, and super mattress.
We will return without any doubt.
