“Interesting hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

We booked for 3 people. When we arrived we were told we will be getting two rooms instead of one for a triple due to the bed being broken. Ok fine -no problem. Service was friendly, I did my best at speaking French and all went well. We had two rooms close to each other, one had windows on the street and the room had windows on the courtyard. Courtyard faces another building. One room was just big enough for the bed, desk and a table. Completely suitable for two adults. The other room was much bigger, way bigger than we expected and a huge bathroom. We liked the hotel because it has an interesting style, friendly staff and clean. You can easily hear neighbors coming and going, doors squeaking open as well. In the room I was in, the courtyard view, I did not hear any street noise. My wife and daughter were in the larger room facing the street and they heard a lot of street noise (including those singing in the night).

The downstairs cafe was fine, simple and plenty of room to handle the rush. There was small petit-pain au chocolat, cereal, croissant, cheese, ham, sausage, eggs, coffee, tea juice for breakfast. We liked it - it was simple and easy and good. The ham was really good.
I would stay again if the hotel was in a different area. It is very close to the Jacques Borsergent metro stop and a further walk from gare du l'est. Anyone who I told about this area (Parisians) said this isn't that great of an area.

Room Tip: If you want quiet, request a courtyard room (not sure what the French translation is) - if you like...

Dear Mike,

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us with other travelers.

I really appreciate your kind comment on the team and I will sahre it with them.

We are about to upgrade our hotel, so on top of having some nice size room as you've said, you will soon enjoy some brand new rooms. That should make your stay even more confortable.

I am glad to read your comments on breakfast, we have been working on it since April, May and it is great to read that it matches our guests expectations.

We hope to welcome you back soon when your travel brings you back to Paris.

With Best regards,

Sébastien Samséou

This hotel is in a very good location. They will charge you the city tax separately, so be prepared to pay a little extra when you arrive. If you can afford their premium double and you get an upper floor then you have a very good view (room 503 was ours). The main problem I had with this hotel is the bed. The springs in the mattress were broken, so it lilted on an angle, which gave real back problems in the morning. Second to that, the rooms are very warm in the summer. There is no air conditioning, but they provide a fan. The mini-fridge was broken, and I had to hunt for the TV remote control. The plus points for this hotel are that it has a safe, fresh enough paint on the walls, and a reasonable quality TV.

On the service side, they are pretty miserable people, but this seems almost to be the standard here in Paris in general. The housekeeping will fail to top up your complimentary coffee every time.

Dear Kate M,

First of all I would like to apologize for the attitude of the team you met while staying with us. We intend to deliver a good service and I am sorry to read that this was your experience with us, I will share this my team.

The view on the 5th floor as you mentionned is very nice as it allows you to see the Basilique du Sacré Coeur on top of the Montmartre hill.

We have fixed the situation with the matress in your room.

As for the Air conditioning, I would just like to remind you that the windows have to be closed for it to work. Once you open the window it will stop it. I will in any case double check the equipment to make sure that it works properly.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us and we look forward to welcome you back in Paris.

Kind regards,

Sébastien Samséou

I went in June end 2013. I had booked in for a two bed room with an extra bed. The AC wasnt working even after we complained downstairs at the reception. The breakfast was great as far as i was concerned. The lift was not as good as it should have been. It takes just 3 people at a time! Strange but true! Location wise, hotel was well placed. Do not forget to ASK FOR YOUR FREE TOOTHBRUSH AND PASTE. Thy are not given or changed in the room but are available on demand at the reception.

Dear Sargundeep,

Thank you for your comment on your recent stay with us.

I appreciate that you found the location convenient and that breakfast was also a good experience for you.

We are curently working on a refurbishment plan in the hotel and the lift is indeed one of our top priority.

As for the Air conditioning, we have had a few challenging days in Paris with unusual heat but I have asked our tecnician to check the equipment.

Some amenities are on request as you mentionned but you are always welcome to ask for them at the reception desk, they will be promptly delivered to you.

We look forward to welcome you back in a future trip to Paris.

Best regards,

Room was on the 7 floor in the eves, you couldn't stand up in the majority of it. No safe in the room, bizarre miniature wardrobe plus a chest of drawers that would not open. Bathroom clean but basic at best. One of the skylight blinds were stuck closed and a very dodgy open electrical connection between the bedside table and wall. Breakfast simple but fresh. Would only use again as a last resort.

On the Plus side, the location is OK, close to a couple of Metro stations and plenty of eating options on the road on which it is located.

It would have felt like good value at €100/night, the €230 I paid felt like robbery anywhere other than in Paris

Room Tip: Rooms on the front have a Balcony that you can stand on, but there is a lot of traffic noise in the...

Dear Customer,

Thank you very much for taking time to share your experience.

You appreciate that you find the location convenient and close to main public transportation systems.

The technicien was informed of your comments and fixed the mentioned points. We would also like to inform you that a refurbishement plan is in progress and will upgrade the comfort level of the hotel.

June is the busiest month in Paris and may have given you a wrong impression of the hotel price.

We stayed here for 2 nights as a party of 2 couples, one of whom was visiting from the US and had never visited Paris before. The price was fairly reasonable by Paris standards, and we were really pleased with our choice of hotel when we arrived.
The rooms are actually a decent size for Paris, and one couldn't fault the cleanliness in any way. We had a lovely balcony view toward the Sacre Coeur, and there was very little road noise to keep us awake at night. We actually slept very well!
The area is perfectly fine, it's just a typical Parisian district and at no time, day or night, did we feel threatened or uneasy. Metro stations are very convenient and near to the hotel, and it was very easy to get around the city.
The staff were very friendly, helpful and pleasant and I really can't fault the experience we had at the hotel. We often visit Paris, and I can honestly say that we'll be using the Hotel Magenta again.

Overall: i would recommend this hotel based on the fact its 3 minute walk to the Jacques Bon Sergent metro- which will take you to all of the attractions (with a few changes).

This hotel is ok, I agree with the 3* rating it displays, it's middle of the road. The usual room price which they display is around 260 euro (premium double for 2 people). We paid just over £100 sterling per room per night which is a great rate & far more realistic, plus city tax( you pay this when you arrive, it's around 2euro a night).

The beds are very clean and comfortable & the bathroom very clean. Hardly any space between the bed & desk wardrobe area. There is a safe but ours was not working-we let the staff know. There's no iron in the room but one on reception you can borrow.

Communal areas scuffed& looking a bit run down in places.

The staff are very friendly, especially the 2 ladies who greeted us & spoke a multitude of languages.

We had breakfast on our last morning as we'd paid 12euro each for it. We found it bearable but I'd imagine other people might find the choice a little dull if you we're to eat in every morning. Hot food choices are scrambled egg& sausage. Cold- some cereal, fruit salad& pastries& small hard mini French rolls(watch your teeth!). I'd recommend walking down the road to a local cafe for a more decent breakfast. There's a great cafe a few blocks away on the same side.

Area is central paris in the 10th district; not the upmarket side of town & therefore the discounted rate is appropriate. On the plus side the restaurants & cafes are much cheaper than touristy Paris!

Room Tip: Perhaps get. Room at the back to avoid traffic noise, although it only gets really busy on the main...

Dear SineadB,

We would like to thank you to share your experience at the hotel Magent with the others travelers.

Thank you very much for your comment regarding the staff.

About the communal areas, the hotel will be on refurbishment during this year and will solved the problems you have mentioned.

You are right about the location of the hotel and the many subway stations close to the hotel give direct access in a maximum of 20 minutes to the Eiffel Tour, Champs Elysees or the Louvre.

We hope to see you back in our hotel when you will be back in Paris.

Best regards,

I have stayed in Paris before and never found the hotels to be anything special, small rooms, aged bathrooms, etc. This 3* hotel was conveniently situated 15 minutes walk from the Gare du Nord and 10 minutes walk from the Place de la Republique, with a metro station a short stroll down the road. It was very clean, our front facing room, although small, was larger than I had expected as was the en suite shower room. The water was always hot! The staff were polite and friendly - at first, I thought they did not speak English and they seemed to understand my French (first learned many years ago, so somewhat dated!). However, I later heard some of them speaking perfect English to non French speakers of various nationalities. I would certainly stay there again. Downside - the lift needs to be replaced, it would not operate with 3 adults in it, took forever to arrive and made alarming noises! We were room only so I could not comment on the breakfast.

Room Tip: Ask for a room fronting the Boulevard Magenta
