It was my first trip to Paris and I could still remember my high school French teacher talking about the history of the "Red Light District". After three long business days, my bud and I decided we would see the sites. He had been to the Pigalle district before, but only as an outside observer. I.., being the cultural spelunker that I am, wanted to have a taste of the Paris night life. Well.., we picked the wrong club. What appeared to be a relatively upscale establishment turned out to be a major hassle and mistake. Don't think for a minute that these clubs are in any way interested in generating revenue from repeat customers. We went in..., paid 20 euro for a dance and a drink apiece (bargain). Both of us were propositioned for "a drink" by our hostess. My buddy resisted. I..., being used to the reward that comes from spoiling an adult entertainer in the U.S., said "sure". When the waiter brought out a "bottle" of champagne, I got nervous. Then I found out that the price for "a drink" was 300 euro. Things kinda fell apart at that point. I called to my buddy and we went out to the bar area. Upon confronting the manager of the establishment I learned that in fact the "menu" posted the cost of "a drink" at 300 euro. As my buddy (having not bought a drink for his girl) attempted to leave the establishment, a bouncer arrived just in time. Now, you have got to understand..., I'm a 6'4", 245lbs American, and I have little appreciation for the French and their "better than thow" attitude. I was ready to carry the manager and the bouncer out the door and see how much more they wanted to play when the manager said..., "65 euro for you and your friend". That seemed much smarter, and being that we both had finished two drinks apiece w/ some pretty hot action in between, I paid the guy and we left laughing. BUT..., BEWARE. This is the type of thing you should expect. If you're not comfortable being confrontational..., then don't buy the girl a drink. Don't buy anything extra. Otherwise..., you will get rolled. You're not in Kansas anymore.
