“EXCELLENT”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

Stayed for 2 nights. Excellent location, we were leaving for Amsterdam from Gare du Nord so chose the hotel for its location. We had a room on the 5th floor with a small balcony looking out at the station. It was very busy on the street below but that made it interesting. The rooms are small but clean and serviced each day. The bathroom was small with an excellent shower. Good internet. Reception staff, day and night were excellent, very helpful. Breakfast was very good and very reasonably priced. Would stay here again.

We stayed at the New Hotel Gare du Nord after arriving on a late Eurostar train from London following about 24 hours of flying and layovers en route from Seattle to Paris. In most circumstances, simply having a flat surface to lie on would have earned five stars if I'd written this review that night. A couple of weeks later, and it falls to a more reasonable two-to-three stars. The staff were nice, although I'll admit to not being used to being asked to surrender my key to leave the building.

The downsides, first: the lift was a classic, old, rickety, tiny lift...but still pretty important for our 6th floor room. The room itself was pretty spartan and very small, and the shower was of comical size with a semi-broken bracket for the faucet handle. The location is a blessing and a curse, as it was literally about a three minute walk (through various hustlers and prostitutes and whatnot) from Gare du Nord. The breakfast was perfectly adequate, and made much more interesting by the medieval basement location. The bed was...flat.

On the upside: our room was on the top floor, with a garret window that looked out on Gare du Nord and Montmartre. The views also provided extra entertainment, in that the hotel across the street appeared to be occupied by a number of guests for whom shyness was not a virtue. It's hard to stay focused on the views of the neighborhood when people are having sex twenty meters across the way right in front of the window. But I digress...

The room was very clean and safe. Breakfast was of good if very homey quality, with lots of fresh-tasting pastries, boiled eggs, coffee, salami, etc. The price was great. The free wifi was reliable and, while a bit slow, a nice touch. We were the only guests we met who spoke English as a first language.

If you stay here, know that it's a rougher neighborhood than the more touristy parts of Paris. Lots of hotels, mainly occupied by French folks transiting through Gare du Nord or basing themselves near the train station to save money over the swank downtown hotels. We definitely felt a bit more hassled from the local version of the globally ubiquitous hawkers/schemers/etc., but it never felt dangerous or threatening. Not a bad option for a night, but with the size and location issues I wouldn't have wanted to stay a week there.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 6th floor with a view of Gare du Nord. The view made up for almost all of the...

This is a classical hotel in Paris, small reception and small rooms. OK hotel in need of renovation, but bathrooms are very nice. Location very close to Gare Du Nord with train, subway and buses. Not a good choice for disabled people, elevator constructed so you have to use part of the stairs anyway - the elevator stops are located between the floors.

This hotel was booked as a package through Eurostar, the location is excellent right across from the Gare Du Nord, we was in the hotel within 5 minutes from getting off the Eurostar. There are lots of restaurants around. There is some noise simply because of the location of the hotel but I found this acceptable. There are good public transport links to all locations of paris with a flat fare of 2euro, tickets can be bought from the driver, The staff in the hotel did offer good advice on transport links. The hotel was clean. The reason I have marked the hotel low was the fact I have paid extra through Eurostar for a superior double room, I was not provided with this room and was given a standard room. I did speak with the hotel manager, he said Eurostar had not booked a superior room for us, I did have the printed out confirmation which stated that a superior double had been booked, despite this he refused to take on any responsibility, made no attempt to check the booking and advised that I contacted Eurostar on my return home. If I had booked a standard room the overall score for the hotel and room would have been a 4

Room Tip: Breakfast is charged as an extra, ensure that you get the room type that was paid for

Friendly staff . Clean room , beds made and room cleaned every day , new looking clean shower and toilet ( compact ) . Very handy place to stay . Used it for the Paris AirShow . I liked the street noise , esp live music from the Gare du Nord . Double glazing & heavy very good at keeping any noise out. Rooms are small but our walls were solid so didn't hear anything from anyone around us. All you can eat Breakfast in a small basement room .

We stayed 2 times at this hotel mainly due to convenience and its proximity to Gare du Nord.
The hotel is in a very noisy area and if you want to leave the window open for some fresh air you will suffer some sleepless nights. I suppose unless you are prepared to fork out big bucks for a 4 or 5 star hotel room in Paris you can not expect much. The rooms were very tiny and you could hardly turn around. The room we had for our second stay did not have a shower screen in the ensuite so consequently everything got wet. This is quite simply not acceptable for a hotel accommodation. It was however located on the 5. floor and thus was considerably quieter. The optional extra Breakfast turned out to be a total chaos with not enough seating areas so you have to share with strangers and only one staff trying to replenish the food. The poor fellow tried his best but was quite simply out of his debt. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about transport and tourist facilities.
On a whole we really only wanted to have somewhere reasonable to stay as we spent all day exploring this fantastic city. To do this the hotel was acceptable.
Thank you to all the staff for accommodating our needs.

Firstly i made the wrong booking as there are 2 hotels with identical Gare du nord (GDN) names, 1 with 2 stars and the other 3 stars, virtually opposite of each other. In my haste i booked New Hotel GDN only to receive much protestations from my family esp wife and kids whom are more used to 3 star and above hotels.

New GDH is directly opposite the hotel and if you carefully scrutinise their terrible reviews, you would find that just a few years back it had plenty of complaints about dank carpet, bed bugs (yikes !!) but these were dated comments.

In short, the rooms in New Hotel GDH is smaller and in our room for 3 there is hardly much space for anything else except to sleep. As for stinky carpets well they no longer exist and have been replaced by floor boards. The bathroom is sparkling new so the place has been retrofitted except for the reception which if the owners are receiving feedback positively should be redone as well as first impression may not be good esp small narrow reception area.

Yes i did find a small roach crawling around the reception area but perhaps this can be expected as the hotel is next to a few eateries etc. The receptionist (a guy) was pushing me to pre book bus shuttle to CDG airport the next day but he fail to percieve the reason why we have chosen the hotel is because it is directly accessible to CDG via the RER (35mins) and at 28 Euro trainfare for 3 pax. i would have to pay 18 euro each for the CDG shuttle and the 3 of us would costs 48 euro which is uneconomical esp when there are cabs right in front of station/hotel that would fit 3 or 4 of us for the trip to CDG costing approx Eur 40 in fares excludings extra 1 euro per peice of luggage. Hence i was put off by the receptionist whose "helpful" disposition was driven by commision from the bus company.

Sleep quality is somewhat compromised by dirty looking bed spreads but the no complaints about the bathroom which is very new and clean (maybe small for some). The walls were bright and cheerful and had some stains as with the only chair in the room. Has air con and good water pressure, No disrespect to the staff cleaning room but the hotel management lacks thoroughness and attention to fine details eg all else is okay but marred by tired looking reception area

I would suggest you check out the reviews on Richmond Hotel around their corne to have a better view what the management of these 2 hotels are like, If you read the terrible review, do bear in mind they are dated and likely before the retrofit.

Looking at the rates between Hotel Gare du north (3 stars) and New hotel gare du nord (2 stars), do find the best deal for yourself. That aside there are many hotels within walking distance of 5 to 10 mins to choose from for these less familar with the locality. Whichever hotel you finally decide for this location, it is well served by restaurants and a Burger King and also a Tesco in the main street behind. Because of unsavory characters you will find anywhere near railway stations, do be careful when you are planning a late night out.
