“Atelier Montparnasse tickled my art-lover fancy.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2005

This little hotel was in the right place for us, with an excellent price, and had the right owner who was always helpful and courteous: Victoria, who also owns the bulldog who dozes beneath the reception desk. And wait until you see the bathrooms: each has a tile mosaic reproduction of an early 20th century painting.

My husband and I stayed there in June 2003 and August 2004, always on the street side, which was noisy early in the morning as the street cleaners came through but gave a more interesting view than the courtyard rooms. The breakfast provided was typical of this class of hotel: very good coffee, fresh croissant and bread, a tiny container of youghurt, some fruit. The small lobby has a street-front sitting area with daily newspapers. The hotel is just steps off blvd. Montparnasse, where there are many cafes, stores, and bistros. The Metro station "Vavin" is on the blvd. Montparnasse, around the corner. And our favorite place for lazing and strolling, the Luxembourg Gardens, is a few blocks down the rue Vavin.

My only complaint arose from Victoria's confusion on the day before we left; she ordered a taxi (v. expensive) rather than a shuttle (less expensive).

However, on our last morning, Victoria told us that she and her business partner were selling the hotel and that the new owner was to take over shortly. We have not confirmed that, as we have no current plans to return to Paris.

This is a great hotel for a visit to Paris. Double rooms are larger then most we have seen in Europe. Bathrooms are private and very western in facilities, and exceptionally cleaned each day. Price is very competitive. Location, Location. This hotel is within two blocks of two Metro stations, which together serve 95% of greater paris. The gardens of Luxemborg are two blocks away, and were a true gem for lunchs and relaxing, don't miss it. Hotel has cable news and is scheduled to have A/C in Summer 2005. The rooms were quiet, with refrigerator, desk, chairs, bed, closet, fan.
But, the best part of this hotel is its front desk staff. Aurthur, the main hotel manager, is a truely genuine, caring individual. Fluent in English, he was constantly willing to help, directed, and advise. Such a pleasant experience at this hotel.

Just spent a few days with my family of four at the hotel. Overall fine.
The location of the hotel is very good: 1 minute to Metro Vavin, just around the block to the lively Boulevard Montparnasse and its neighborhood.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room clean, esp. nice modern bathroom, and quiet. The room for four though is rather small, even considering Paris standards. The elevator is nothing for claustrophobic people (nor for obese) and the stairways can make you faint - narrow, steep and winding.

We recently returned from a two week trip through France. For our first week we stayed at the charming Atelier Montparnasse. I found this hotel searching online and then made my decision based on the comments here on TripAdvisor.

We stayed on the top floor in the junior suite, which was quite roomy (the Fujiyta room). Here were the positives about this hotel:

1) GREAT staff. Every staff person was friendly and helpful. Making pointers and recommendations about local restaurants, how to get around the city, where to find things, etc. After a couple of days, I unfortunately got a stomach virus and was pretty ill. I spent one day recovering and that night, after going out and getting some chicken soup, the staff INSISTED on cooking and serving with some bread and beverage. While they didn't have a full kitchen, they did everything they could to help.

2) GREAT location. Within a couple minutes walking distance were at least 8 restaurants including 3 famous ones (Le Dome, Le Select, La Coupole). Jardin du Luxembourg down the street (great for walking and jogging). 1 minute walk to the Vavin Metro stop (literally around the corner). A very good coffe spot, Le Vavin, down the street as well as several on Montparnasse within a couple minutes walking distance.

3) Our room was clean and comfortable. Even though we were on the street side we were never concious of any noise. There was a very nice tile mosiac of a painting in our bathroom (as each room has). Great touch.

4) The hotel serves a petit déjourner (extra). But nice to have the option just in case.

5) Everything was close by -- restaurants, shopping, coffee shops, movie theaters, metro, gardens, train station, etc. It was a terrific spot to be based to start each day's adventure.

The only things missing (for me). We didn't need it (because we went in late October), but I didn't see air conditioning. This might be an issue during the summer. I wish the hotel had internet access (wifi at least). Again, this is just something I needed. The Vavin cafe had wifi access, but the connect time period was limited. If the hotel had one or both of these items it would be outstanding.

We just returned from a week's stay at Atelier Montparnasse and we could not have been happier. Both Kim and Victoria were always gracious and willing to help. They certainly made our trip to Paris memorable. The hotel is in a perfect location. It's within a few yards of the metro station and about a five minute walk to Luxembourg Gardens. The rooms were clean and comfortable, but just slightly on the small side. If you want a quiet room, ask for a room facing the courtyard or else it can be pretty noisy. Overall, I would definitely return to Atelier Montparnasse, that is, as long as Victoria and Kim are still there.

I just returned from a three-night stay at the Atelier Montparnasse. We had a room on the 4th floor of the six-floor building. Our room was small-ish, but very clean and comfortable. The view of the courtyard was nothing special, but it was very quiet...we heard no noise from other guests or the street (which was on the other side of the hotel).

On our second night, we were given the option of moving to a room on the 5th floor (the 5th and 6th floor rooms have been recently re-done), but we opted to stay in our original room. The upgrade was not significant.

The hotel staff was very helpful and pleasant...the English bulldog behind the front desk is very friendly, so if you like dogs, I see this as a plus!

We did not go for the breakfast in the hotel...we'd rather explore the neighborhood in the mornings. As an American, I've often found it difficult to get a good cup of "American coffee" but there's a new Starbucks just down the street, toward the Montparnasse main station. I know, I know...drinking Starbucks in Paris is frowned on, but if you want a good, consistent cup of coffee, you always know what you're getting at Starbucks.

Also...the Lotus Cafe, just south of the hotel at the corner of Vavin and Montparnasse, is terrific. It's across the street from Le Select, which is a more traditional (and more historic) Paris cafe. I'd recommend both places.

The Atelier Montparnasse is VERY close to the Vavin Metro station...it's less than 50 yards away, at the corner of Vavin and Montparnasse. It made travel in Paris real easy.

In all, I'd recommend the Atelier Montparnasse for anyone looking for good, clean, well-priced accommodations in Paris. It is not a luxury hotel, by any standards, but it was a great home-base for us while in Paris.
