We booked two rooms at Jardin de Villiers (total of about £800 for 3 nights) in June 2012 for myself and partner plus my partner’s parents (their first trip to Paris). Having stayed in the area on our last Paris visit, we chose this hotel based on the glowing reviews. The hotel is decent but the glowing reviews are a bit puzzling.
The immediate street to the hotel is not at all inviting and the building was undergoing building works so the façade was covered in scaffolding. However, there are very cool streets nearby which offer good shopping, restaurants and market stalls. Two metro stations are within a few minutes walking distance. The “entrance” and lobby of the hotel are uninviting and quite dated (coffee and pastries – leftover from breakfast no doubt- are available in the lobby all day though). The jardin, after which the hotel is named, was available to use but it was not the Paris oasis we expected and never used it.
The room has been updated with decent décor with large windows that when open let the Paris sounds in (we had no problem sleeping) although bland and very dark. Perhaps the rooms just looked better in comparison to the very, very dingy hallways? The bed was comfortable but nothing exceptional. The large bathroom had been partially updated too which left it looking mismatched between modern and old (not a good match)
Breakfast was simple but replenished throughout the morning and filled us up (choices of yogurt, pastries, coffee/tea/juice, cereals, fruit salad, and cheeses).
The staff was friendly but not overly so.
Overall and compared to the other hotel with the same rating that we stayed at previously, this hotel was a bit disappointing and although a decent hotel, there’s nothing that would take us back.
