My partner and I stayed at the Bel Ami for three nights towards the end of March. The hotel is located in St Germain on Rue San Benoit, just off the Boulevard St Germain and is two or three minutes walk from St Germain des Pres Metro station. This provides an excellent base from which to get around Paris and one of the L'Open Tour buses (the Orange line) stops very close to the Hotel. All the major sites are within walking distance of the hotel; for example, the Musee D'Orsay is around 15 minutes away and Notre Dame is a 20 minute stroll.
The hotel is stylish and modern. All the staff are very helpful and speak many languages. They could not do enough to make our stay more pleasant. Only a complete buffoon would make a mistake when entering the code in the safe in the room but the reception staff were immediately on hand to rectify the problem for us; by us, I mean me! The Concierge desk staff are also willing to help in any way they can such as by booking restaurants and making recommendations. The service we experienced was second to none.
The room is perhaps small which is something other reviewers have pointed out but we have come to expect this in Europe and so for us that is not much of a consideration. If there is a criticism of the room I would say that there was a lack of shelf and drawer storage space, though again for us that is a minor issue. The bathroom was fine and the shower superb. The corridors have a very pleasant aroma as you stroll down them towards the lifts. Needless to say, the hotel was spotless.
We had breakfast one day in the Hotel restaurant. It provided a wide range of choice, more than you will get in most cafes. As well as the usual croissants, preserves, cold meats, cheese and cereals there were hot dishes of bacon, scrambles eggs, mushrooms and diced potato.
There are some good cafes and restaurants nearby. Directly opposite is the famous Le Relais de Venise L'Entrecote, at the top of Rue San Benoit on the Boulevard St Germain is Cafe de Flores and almost next door to this is Cafe de Deux Magots. The last two are probably overpriced but a few minutes walk away, in the back streets and thus off the tourist trail, is Rue Guissade. Two bistros on this street which are not formal or pricey but which serve great food and offer superb value are La Boussole and La Bastide D'Opio. The ambience in these restaurants is wonderful and we enjoyed a great meal in each. Both are worth seeking out.
Next time we visit Paris we shall choose the Bel Ami as our hotel and I have no hesitation in recommending it. We enjoyed a marvellous stay at this chic establishment.
