We booked this place on a last minute trip and only then saw the terrible reviews on TripAdvisor, so frankly we went in expecting a dump. Well, a dump it wasn't but the Ritz it wasn't either, not by a stretch.
To start, let me explain that we were in a room on one of the top floors and had booked one of the rooms which I think were listed as either Deluxe or Superior, and at a cut-rate price as a last minute booking. If we'd paid the amount that was listed as the rack rate at the hotel, I would feel much differently about the place.
The worst I can say is that the room was desperately out of date in its decor, and that the carpeted walls (yes!) needed a good vacuum. Otherwise there were no issues with the cleanliness of the place either in the room or the bathroom (and we can be really fussy about this.) The staff were all very polite and though we didn't interact with them very frequently, when we had questions or needs they were attended to. We did not eat the breakfast. The walls were very thin and you could hear both the other occupants and the people out on the busy street. We live in a city centre so this did not bother us, but it may be a nuisance to others.
The location is really quite convenient although you should know in advance that the hotel is in the middle of a pedestrian shopping zone that is very, very touristy, and the blocks immediately to the north of the hotel have your sex shops and peep shows. We walked that area through once after dark and didn't feel threatened or bothered in any way, but can understand why previous reviewers might feel this way. But that area is really easily avoidable if you're uncomfortable, just don't go to the immediate north out of the hotel. Otherwise, being within walking distance of the Pompedou, Notre Dame, Louvre, and almost everything in the city centre was invaluable, and if you go a little ways outside the Halles area there are some lovely little restaurants and much quieter neighbourhoods.
Overall, we were pretty pleased with our stay, but of course please bear in mind that we came to the place with ridiculously low expectations. As we had no problems with cleanliness or space, I think we might have lucked out in getting one of the superior or deluxe rooms; based upon other reviews, I think that's the only way that I'd recommend this place. But honestly, if you don't get a good rate on those rooms, you're probably better off spending the same amount of money on a nicer place.
Ask for one of the rooms on the top floor, both for the space and the balcony; only book a superior...
