“Impeccable in everyway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

Someone opens the door for us. We are 15 minutes late having headed in the wrong direction when we got out of the Metro. Not a problem. We're given a choice of tables. Every table seems suitable and far enough away from others so as not to have to hear their conversations which seemed to be mostly in French anyway.

The menu is simple enough. You have to decide how many courses to have. We know from seeing their menu on their website that we'd go with the four courses. Amuse bouche type dishes seemed to start appearing almost right away and little extras continued through the meal including dessert.

Each dish is creatively presented with flavors and textures that let you know the person in the kitchen is first rate. I could not imagine eating better even at restaurants charging three or more times what we paid. The sommelier pleasantly describes each glass of wine which seems perfected paired with that I'm eating. Pacing between courses is spot on. The meal lasting just over two hours is one of the most enjoyable dining experiences we have ever had.

“A feast for the senses at great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

We spent a couple of days in Paris around New Year. Of course, being in the capital of gastronomy, a menu Réveillon (or New Year's Eve menu) was something we had to indulge in as well. This turned out to be not entirely trivial, since we were looking to keep the trip at least somewhat on a budget. As it turned out, all the truffle, foie gras and champagne-loaded menus around town were priced rather steeply. Enter Cobéa: generally seen as a 'strong' 1-star restaurant and offering a menu Réveillon at a quite reasonable rate.

So, we took the plunge and we were fortunate enough to get a table. Arriving on the 31st of December, we found a modern, minimalistic interior with a vibrant, enthousiastic staff. The 8-course menu that ensued was a feast for the senses - excellent ingredients (aged Comté, scallops, caviar) prepared with accuracy and brilliant taste. Worth a special mention: the scallop/cauliflower/caviar dish with a white balsamic jus. Probably one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten, and it got the better half raving as well :)

So, are there any downsides? None I can think of, except maybe the fact that the location is somewhat off the beaten track in the Montparnasse district. Two Metro stops are well within walking distance though, so we didn't find that to be an issue at all - even all dressed up in (well, for one of us) high heels ;)

We know we are very likely to return when we're in Paris again. The set lunch is a steal at 44 euros, as is the 4-course dinner at 65. Go and enjoy: you'll find a nice, modern, non-stuffy place featuring a chef with a golden touch and a vibrant young staff - which will make you feel right at home while you are enjoying some brilliant food.

“Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

+ inventive, beautifully presented cuisine
+ smart, but unfussy atmosphere
+ outstanding service

- booking in advance required to get in

We were looking for a special dinner during a recent trip to Paris, and when I read an article describing Cobea as great food without the pretentiousness of a Michelin star, the deal was sealed. I emailed to make a booking about three weeks in advance and according to our waiter, its tough to get a table for a Saturday night less than two weeks in advance. We were not disappointed - the setting is smart but laid back, the service was friendly without being too much, and the food was creative and delicious.

Menu consists of your choice of 4, 6, or 8 courses, which may be an issue if you have strict dietary restrictions. We do not, but our waiter did ask so imagine they will accommodate. They brought us loads of extras as well - though we ordered 6 courses, we actually had closer to 10 by the end of the night! Brilliant location for a special occasion or just a treat.

“Very good!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012

Smart and casual atmosphere and simple but still haut cuisine. Lunch with a friend in that one michelin's star restaurant was an enjoyable journey organized by a young chef Philippe Bélissent.

“Fine new find in Paris”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner on a weeknight here. The choices of either 4, 6, or 8 courses is a great idea (4 were more than sufficient for us - they added two amuse-bouche and several desserts). We also chose the "Surprise wines" (their choice of a glass of white and red) for each of us. Service and ambiance are outstanding and the imaginative and creative food are presented like works of art. We highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion.
