Paris IS expensive at the moment, mainly because of the poor exchange rate against sterling and the dollar, so just be prepared to pay more than you expect. The Pont Royal is not a bargain, but I thought it was good value considering the location, size of rooms, the quality of the accommodation, and the excellent service we got.
We had 2 deluxe rooms, well furnished, which were large by Paris standards and had room for easy chairs and a writing desk. The staff were very polite and helpful, offered to speak French or English as we preferred, and offered us maps and hotel umbrellas on a rainy day. They also recovered and returned property we had left behind!
We had hotel breakfasts in the deal, and the buffet had everything you would expect in a British hotel, plus proper croissants!
The Pont Royal is 5 mins walk from the Seine, and less than 10 mins from both the Louvre and the Musee d'Orsay, so we walked everywhere instead of taking the metro. The neighbourhood is very good, with interesting shops, and Bon Marche is 10 mins walk away.
Our best local meal was at L'Epi Dupin (wonderful food for 34 euros) but you must book, and the salted caramel icecream at Berthillaud's in the Ile St Louis is amazing.
