We arrived at lunchtime and left our bags for safe keeping as (we had been told previously) the rooms were not ready until 3pm - no problem! Hotel located right by Rome Station, which is half a dozen stops from Gare Du Nord. From the hotel you can reach the Moulin Rouge, and Sacre Coeur within a 15 - 20 walk. Lafayette (good shopping) is about a 15 min walk away too).
The hotel is located in a fairly quiet street, (our room was at the front of the building); we had a triple room which was lovely, the beds were comfy and the room spotlessly clean. Tea and coffee facilties, a (powerful!) hairdryer for use in the bathroom and a "mini bar" / fridge provided in room also for convenience. We didn't have breakfast as wasn't included and it was cheaper to eat out of the hotel. We did have a couple of glasses of wine there though and they were reasonably priced for a hotel (€6.40 for 25cl).
The staff were very nice and obliging, all speak good English and nothing is a problem for them. They can help you with directions, tourist attractions advice etc.
Paris does not have to cost you a fortune - we found a lovely bar / bistro place 5-6 mins from the hotel on Rue Milan (off Rue Amsterdam) call BAR MILAN, there we had an excellent sirloin steak with chips and salad for €12.50 - 50cl of decent red wine cost from €6 for a carafe too. There are, of course, McDonalds, Subway, KFC etc (if you are really on a shoestring!) and obviously the Patisseries for croissants etc so you don't need to blow your budget unless you really want to!
We did all the usual tourist attractions- we chose the Red Bus Tour which is useful if you are a first timer to Paris and want to take in all the usual sights. A one day pass is €27 but 2 days is only 4 EURO more - the hotel have these tickets for sale at reception. The Metro is easy enough to use, you can buy a carne of 10 tickets either on the Eurostar or at the station but we just bought singles for convenience at €1.70 each (we didn't take more than 6 or 7 trips anyway).
I would also recommend the boat trip on the Seine (Capitane something or other!) which was lovely in the evening, a nice 3 course meal and drinks was about £60 and a two hour cruise on the Seine taking in Paris by night. You can book this online before you go if you prefer but it wasn't really that much cheaper to be honest.
As it was my first time in Paris I was a bit concerned about getting lost etc but the locals were also very helpful too, on more than one occasion we were asked where we needed to get to as we obviously looking like we needed help! We found them very accommodating and they really helped make our stay a very pleasant one.
I would definitely recommend the Berne Opera and would stay here again. Many thanks to the staff for making our first time in Paris very memorable.... TRES BIEN!
