“Construction through 2015”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

Les Halles has been the city's central market for over 800 years, and it has evolved to reflect the changing needs of Parisians. It's currently going through a new transformation to bring the space into the 21st century (see the link). There are still international brands, local chains, and some entertainment options available here, but until the construction is completed in 2015, there's not much to do in the shopping center. However, if you use the metro or RER in Paris, you will undoubtedly find yourself passing through the Chatelet-Les Halles station at some point, and if you are traveling and need anything functional, you can find clothes, electronics and sporting goods as you leave the station.

“Busy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

It is a busy shopping center in the heart of Paris. Not much things to do there besides cinema and shopping. Many construction and renovation works going on..

“One of my least favorite places in Paris”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

True there are a lot of different stores here but the ambiance is "shopping mall boring." Not much here feels French--these mall shops could be in any of hundreds of cities around the world. Peopled in part by young people who consciously find traditional French society worth rejecting, there isn't much reason for a tourist to go here, except perhaps to see an alternative to more classic neighborhoods. Or maybe to watch French police arrest people for drug possession.

“If you like shopping...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

This place is great if you love shopping malls. It's indoors, underground and has everything (including the metro). There's even a swimming pool. We walked through a few times because we were using the metro and saw how extensive it went on and knew if we wanted to stay and shop it was the perfect place to be.

There are also eateries, a starbucks, a gym, and too many places to name but it's cool to just wander around if you have time.

“Dreadful spot in the heart of Paris”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

Les Halles, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, used to be the wholesale market where all the food was brought into the city and redistributed. Unfortunately, in the 1970's it was decided that the market would be moved to Rungis, the traditional area destroyed and replaced at great cost by a sort of sunken shopping mall on the top of a huge metro-RER station. The Forum des Halles is again under renovation to be replaced by an even more ugly design, at big expenses. All the charm of the area has been lost, les Halles became a dreadful and quite unsafe spot in the heart of Paris. There are still nice streets around, a beautiful church, Sainte Eustache and some nice restaurants not far from la Bourse. The famous cafe Coste was closed years ago but le Pere Tranquile is still there. Instead of young "branches" meeting there before going to le Palace or Les Bains Douches there are some touristes. It is a very sad place for those who knew it before; mais ou sont les neiges d'antan?
