Booked through Venere. We just got back (yesterday) from an 8 night stay at the Hotel Albe in Paris, France.
Our family of 5 stayed in 2 rooms, one double, one triple (rooms 213 and 212 respectively). (Ps, I'm pretty sure the hotel reads these reviews: somebody earlier here had complained about being ripped off saying it had to be a maid with a key - one thing we noticed was *the doors do not latch* if you just let them close, you have to pull them (if inside) or push them (if outside) the room. Because our kids were going from room to room alot, we left our door -not latched- more than once and more than once a manager or staffer pulled the door shut to latch it, so maybe they saw the complaint here and are sensitive to it).
The hotel is in an excellent location, especially given that you're something like a hundred feet from the front door to the St.Michel metro stop. (Of course, what nobody will tell you but I will - once you're underground you may have to walk and walk and walk to get to the train platform, but thats "to be expected". [?] Anyway...) Great location. Loads of greek restaurants in the neighborhood but a few french restaurants, a couple night clubs, a couple bakerys, a couple crepe places all within a block in either direction. Pharmacy close by also. Great landmarks within easy to moderate walks, greater landmarks and venues simple enough to reach by Metro. (and yes, we got an "orange cards" for each member of the family for unlimited metro travel all week and recouped multiple times over the cost over what single or carnet metro prices would have been).
Of course, Notre Dame is an easy (EASY) walk. (I walked over there three or four times just on a lark while my family rested from me running them all over the rest of Paris).
Ok, back to the hotel, not an overwhelming number of rooms, but the place was really booked while we were there since it was Easter - the standard Euro breakfast buffet was pretty crowded most of the mornings we stayed at the hotel (included in the room rate). (Breakfast could have been improved a wee bit, but we ate there every morning and can't really complain since it was "free".)
Ok, one observation: alot (ALOT) of people staying there were French, hear what I'm saying? It's like your grandad always used to say on those long car trips about restaurants, "well, if the truckers eat there, it most be good!" - so I figured the hotel has a good reputation among the out of towners coming into the big city for the holiday.
Narrow staircase (see pic) but not terrible to go up and down on. The -only- negative thing I can say about the hotel is that the elevator was being serviced at least 3 of the days while we were there - -however - the hotel always had the elevator running by dinner time (and all night), then they worked more on it the next day. So, no major problem.
This is a 3 star hotel with three star performance. It was very clean and modern feel to it without being over the top "nouveau" feeling (like they were trying too hard - the feel of the hotel (to us) was just right).
Front desk staff ranged from very fluent english to pretty good kinda sorta english. Cleaning staff was more ala francaise. Morning breakfast was administered by mostly one young lady who was very friendly and between her english (better than my french) and my frenglish, we got along famously.
Side note: memorize a few french phrases and you'll open all kinds of smiles.
Noise has been raised here a few times - there *are* two competing dance crews working the corner right outside the door (see the pic of a typical evening). But - we were on the 2nd foor, not the top floor, and nobody in our family complained to me at all, and with the windows closed I was barely aware of the noise and it certainly didn't keep any of us from sleeping.
Would we recommend? Absolutely. Stay again? More than likely except that I'd like to try staying in another area just to try it sometime. The location here is fantastic. I won't belabor the review with anecdotes about the restaurants on the street (Rue de la Harpe or Rue de la Huchette). (Note that google maps pointer to the hotel is wrong wrong wrong. The hotel is not on the corner of Harpe and St Severins, but Harpe and Huchette, a much better place than you'd expect from Google maps).
