Reviews were a little mixed with this hostel. But I loved the price and location. So my boyfriend and I booked a private room and it was great. There were some ups and downs though.
Positives - So we stayed from January 12th to the 16th of 2013. It was so easy to find from Gare du Nord! Straight down the street. It was great. Anvers is the closest station though. It's like a 5 minute walk and directly down the street. It made transportation very easy. Oh and the neighborhood was great. Not dodgy at all. Lots of great cafes nearby. (Try Les Oiseaux across from Anvers station! Best cappuccino I've ever had) Our room was on the 6th floor. Room was kinda small but it was just my boyfriend and I so it's not like the room was crowded. The room actually had a closet! And a safe. Rare things to find in hostels around Europe. Everyone there was pretty young too. So it was nice. The staff was pretty relaxed too. Really chill people. The wifi worked great in the lobby, but not so much in our room, being on the 6th floor and all. We could sometimes access it from the computer, but never from my iPod. Our room had a cute little balcony. It made for a beautiful view of the Sacre Coeur! The Sacre Coeur was also a very short walk! And if you buy a Paris Visite Pass (We did and it was the perfect route for spending 5 days there) you can take the funicular tram up to the Sacre Coeur instead of the steps. Very helpful. The breakfast here was very basic, but you don't need much. There was hot chocolate, coffee, apple cider, juice, milk, fresh croissants, and cereal. It was kinda lack luster and left something to be desired, but it did the job!
Negatives - Upon check in, they wanted our passport numbers or else they wouldn't give us a room. It was super sketchy. And the lady wasn't nice about it either. We had to fill out a paper with our information and "passport number" was one line on it and I left it blank, not wanting to give out that information. And she rudely said "Well we need the number or I will not give you a room" And I was like "wow. okay" and scribbled it down for her. I don't remember her name but she had a thick accent and had dark hair. She was extremely rude and I never had a pleasant experience with her. Everyone else was great though :) Other down side, wifi was only great in lobby. But it wasn't a huge deal. Our shower was very small though. I actually laughed at the size of it. We had just come from a London hostel that had a shower that could fit 3 people in it, to one that could barely fit all 110 lbs of me. Hahahaha. The curtain would get wet during the shower and stick to my body. So uncomfortable, I thought I was going to fall out and break my neck. And the shower leaked ALL OVER THE FLOOR. So don't leave your clothes on the floor before you get in the shower. But again, minor detail. Easy cleanup. The elevator could barely fit myself and my boyfriend with our luggage in it. It was very cramped. At one point I accidentally hit the alarm button in there because we were so cramped for space. No one came to help though... It could have been a real emergency! Oh and the elevator stopped on every half floor. Not every floor. So we were on the 6th floor, but the button only went up to 5. So we had to go to 5 and then walk up more of the spiral staircase.
I might look around at other places next time, but I know this is a safe bet. Also, on the day you check out, you're supposed to take your sheets down to the first floor.. Try this: one person go the very bottom of the spiral staircase without the sheets. One person stay on your floor with the sheets (we were 6th, the top, so it was perfect) and drop the sheets down the center. It's the most fun you'll ever have watching them cascade through the air. Hahahaha. My boyfriend and I had the brilliant idea to do that and we couldn't stop laughing afterwards. Cheap thrills ;) haha.
