My wife and I just got back from this hotel and loved it! The hotel is located on the Place d'Italie square, which is in the 13th district in the southeast of the city of Paris. The square has a metro station which means, literally, that nothing is more than 10-15 minutes away from you. Once we figured out the Metro map (which didn't take long) we felt completely comfortable and safe using the Metro to get around.
Here is how you get to the hotel from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport: 1. Take RER line B train from the airport, follow the signs, I think it cost around 11 Euro. 2. Get off on the Denfert Rochere (sp?) stop. 3. Stay in this metro station and follow the signs to get on Line 6 toward Nation (every metro line is listed by it's ending stop. Be sure you get on the train that is going in the direction you want to go). 4. Get off on Place d'Italie stop. 5. Follow the "Sortie" (exit) signs to Place d'Italie square. 5. Facing the square, walk around the square to the left, looking down the streets off of the square until you see the pink "M" of the Mercure Gobelins Place d'Italie hotel. Hope that helps!!
About the rooms. Small as you would expect in Paris, but very well appointed. Modern looking with king sized bed. Small t.v. with BBC as only station in English (oh well, we didn't come to Paris to watch tv). Our room had a window that looked out onto the entrance to the hotel that they show on their website. This was smaller than the pictures led me to believe. The hotel is not actually on the Place d'Italie square, but 50 yards off of it. The bathrooms were also modern with bowl sinks. The shower pressure and heat were great. The only complaint I had was the shower door. Imagine a shower/tub combo with a glass door on a hinge on it. Now cut the door in half so that it only goes halfway down the tub. Sound crazy? Well this is what we had. I soaked the entire bathroom everytime I took a shower, much to my wife's annoyance. She did a little bit better job keeping the place dry. This is a very minor complaint though and would not keep me from booking this hotel again.
The staff here was very friendly and helped us each morning as we set out to explore Paris. The girl who was usually at the desk in the mornings spoke very little English, but was still very helpful in showing us EXACTLY where to go to catch the Metro trains we needed to get to our destination. A couple of the other girls at the front desk did speak English and were equally as helpful. The hotel also let us keep our bags at the hotel after check-out so we could wander freely around Paris until our train for Rome left that evening.
Place d'Italie has a couple of fun looking cafes (we didn't eat there but they looked good), a pastry/sandwich shop (where we did grab a great sandwich one day), a KFC, a McDonalds, a mall looking building with a Mexican restaurant and a Hippopotamus (some kind of French fast-food chain I think). There may have been more, but that's what we saw. On Sunday and Monday there was a market set up on the sidewalk that stretched a long way down one of the streets off of Place d'Italie. It was like an American flea market, but had fresh fruits, fish, meats and cheeses. We enjoyed walking through it.
Lastly, we booked our trip through a travel agent and the package price included the hotel's breakfast. We loved it! It had sausage, eggs, pankcakes (hot items), then had croissants, other assorted pastries, tons of jams, jellys, honeys and nutella(our favorite!), cold cereal, warm milk (for coffee), peaches, mixed fruit, prociutto, cheese, packaged cheese(camonbert, el presidente), coffee, orange juice, mixed fruit juice. I probably wouldn't pay $15 for it but since it was include in our price, we were glad to have it and looked forward to it every morning.
If you are looking for a hotel in the heart of Paris, this probably isn't it. But if you want a little less expensive hotel, very close to a Metro stop (I can't say enough about how easy it was to use. Oh yeah we bought a "carnet" of tickets the first day. You get 10 tickets for a discounted price. We bought a carnet each, used all of them in 2 and a half days and bought one more for the last day and half) , with nice rooms and bathrooms, with a good breakfast, and a helpful staff, this is the place for you
