“Arguably the most luxurious hotel in Paris”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

My family and I recently stayed in a Superior Room at the Shangri-La Hotel in the heart of Paris. The hotel, which opened fairly recently, is located in the completely renovated and restored palace that once belonged to Napoleon Bonoparte's grandnephew, Price Roland Bonaparte. The hotel is absolutely stunning. Attention was paid to every detail, from spectacular marble lobby to the breathtaking swimming pool and spa. Our spacious room overlooked the beautifully landscaped garden that belongs to the hotel. Our marble bathroom and dressing area was beautiful and oversized as well. We could even see the Tour Eiffel from both of our bathroom and bedroom windows! The service is impeccable at the hotel, especially the extremely professional and friendly concierge service, who bent over backwards to be sure that our stay in Paris went perfectly. We were impressed that the hotel offers a selection of reasonably priced children's meals, which my daughters enjoyed on several occasions.

The location in the 16th arrondissement is superb, as we were able to easily walk to the Avenue des Champs-Élysées as well as several of the city's best museums.

After staying at several of the other 5-Star hotels in Paris, I can easily say that the Shangri-La is by far the most beautiful and best one of all. We will definitely return to this hotel---the sooner the better!

Room Tip: The rooms that overlook the hotel's garden also offer stunning views of the Eiffel Tower and are...

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2014

We stayed in December over Christmas Eve and Christmas for three nights. We had two rooms. One Superior which was upgraded to a Deluxe room thanks to AE FHR program and then our room which we paid a bit more for (quite a bit) which was a guaranteed TERRACE Premier Eiffel Room. We wanted a view and got it! WOW is all we can say about this room. There are only two in the hotel like this and basically they are a corner room with view of the Eiffel Tower from the bedroom and the bathroom and then stairs up to a roof top terrace that has chairs, table, lounge chairs, etc. The view was amazing.

As far a location, we enjoy walking and were able to walk everywhere without any problems or issues. The location is great. 10-15 minute walk to the Champs. 5 minute walk to the tower.

PROS:
ROOM:
Room size was great
Room was clean and always serviced at least twice a day
Bathroom was great, spacious and had everything you could think of, down to toothbrushes, combs, etc.
blackout shades were great
Bed was super comfy
plenty of pillows
great bedside control for all lights and shades
Terrace was spacious and cleaned daily
Closet was HUGE
Comp shoe shine a great deal
Comp WiFi!!

HOTEL:
Beautiful hotel with lots of history
The bar was great, nice place to have drinks in the evening
Breakfast (which was included) had everything you could think of and was tasty
Shang Palace restaurant - EXCELLENT (separate review)

SERVICE:
WOW. From the moment you are at the front door to the moment you leave you are pampered.
Check-in was seamless and we were walked to our room
Front desk team was always helpful, courteous and smiling
Doormen, bellmen, all were always helpful and smiling
Concierge Team - Tony, Bastien, and all the rest of the team were amazing and so helpful with great recommendations, tickets and general knowledge. They went above and beyond with every request or question we had. Other hotels could learn from them!

CONS:
NONE!

We would return in a heartbeat. This is our 7th time in Paris, and this was by far our best stay.

Highly recommend this hotel, you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Ask for Eiffel view.

We only stayed here for one night but it was a fantastic experience. Fantastic unfussy service, helpful advice from the concierge, an amazing meal at L'Abeille, and a bed to die for. I need to go back.

Five star all the way. Greet you at your taxi and take you right to your room to check in with a nice jasmine tea brought to your room. Went down to the beautiful restaurant (huge round skylight in the ceiling) and forgot my glasses. Within minutes the waiter brought out a box with the different prescription strengths for me to choose so I wouldn't have to go back to the room and find them!! The hotel is just steps away from the Eiffel Tower and river cruises. It was pouring rain for most of our five day stay, every time we went out they offered car service and/or an umbrella. Will definitely stay at the fabulous Shangri-La next trip to Paris.

A great hotel delivers a uniformly superior experience, with some nice positive surprises thrown in. The Shangri-La has most elements of a great hotel, in terms of location, beautiful structure, comfortable quarters, elegant tasteful decor, amazing bed, luxurious bathroom products. It also has uniformly professional ground level staff (doorman, concierge, reception area, customer relations). It even throws in a few positive surprises like fresh fruit in the room.

The area where it falters is in the operations management side of servicing the rooms, and more generally room-level service matters. We had similar experiences as another reviewer here in terms of the rooms not being serviced fairly late in the afternoon-- most small (as this hotel is) luxury hotels do a much better job at this (in fact most will come and freshen up your room when you're out). This is not a mega conference hotel where room level staff operate on fixed-schedule rounds-- we expect a little more attention. The more unfortunate part is that the person who makes the bed and tidies up the place apparently does not feel responsible to remove visibly dirty plates or cups, but rather stacks them for someone else to clear-- possibly the person in charge of the mini bar or some such. It is not a good feeling to walk into your room and everyday find something that is sloppily handled or left dirty-- over a four night stay in November, this happened daily-- not once did we walk in the suite and find it perfect, or even acceptable.

We also had a similar experience to another where a staff member entered/knocked even when the do not disturb sign was on-- and a not-altogether-professional-looking one at that. To add insult to injury, my US cell phone (which does not work in France) disappeared from the room-- in all fairness the customer relations person showed great concern when I reported it and conducted an "investigation"-- but that is just damage control, that did not pan out in any case.

Make sure you try the Chinese restaurant in the hotel; the food is excellent, comparable to the food we've had at the Shangri-La in Kowloon. It should definitely be part of the (positive) experience-- service is excellent, and all flavors are superb.

Overall, our mid-November getaway at the Shangri-La could have been better, and should have for the rates charged. The five stars should not stop on the lobby level and should permeate the entire operation-- and clearly the room and floor level side requires intervention in order for the hotel to achieve the potential suggested by all the other positive aspects.

Booked 2 rooms together, but we were put on different floors and opposite sides of hotel. At 3.30 on my return, the room not serviced and a member of staff walked into friends room at 11.30pm when she was in bed. We were given a free meal as an apology. So they tried to put things right but was not up to 5 star standard.
