“Tiny and immaculate hotel on the Canal St Martin”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013

After several attempts we finally got a room at the Citizen Hotel on the Canal St Martin. Its tiny - about 12 rooms so it is frequently booked up but we were lucky and they had a room for one night. The hotel feels mildly expensive but set against the price of a room is that there is a very nice complimentary breakfast, drinks between 6pm and 7pm, and snacks and soft drinks in the room and use of room iPad in the hotel.

Our room was well thought out, nice shower, loo and sink with good towels and bits and bobs, nice bed, warm, good curtains. It was small. Paris hotel rooms are often small, tiny compared with American hotel rooms but even so it was small. I think the rooms vary quite a lot in size and price - if you are a very neat person, then the smallest may suit you fine but you should ask about room sizes when booking. For one night our room was great.

The staff were lovely and helpful.

Its hard to rate places when you go to hotels infrequently but trying to save 5 points for the amazing, this was certainly between good and very good and so I'm giving it 4 points.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

We stayed at Le Citizen for 3 nights in February. The staff are exceptionally welcoming. The hotel is small (which we like) and the rooms are very comfortable and warm. We did find the traffic below our room along the Canal St Martin to be a little noisey in the evening and also some heavy walking type noise from the room above. This is my only criticism.
Breakfast is included and the juice/tea and coffee made to order. We were offered eggs on one morning, but otherwise there were pastries, toast and cereal to choose from. We ate at three of the restaurants recommended to us by the hotel and all of them were absolutely fabulous in the quality of food and the price. The staff were only too happy to make the bookings and provide the short walking directions. We had a late flight on the day of departure and the reception staff were once again only too happy to store our luggage for the day, order a taxi for when we returned to pickup our bags and also offered us a glass of wine whilst we warmed up and waited for the taxi to arrive....a very nice touch! In terms of proximity to attractions, we set off on foot on day two of our stay at 9am and walked through the lovely streets which surround the hotel to the Seine and to Notre Dame and then past the Louvre and arrived on the Champs Elysees for lunch. After lunch we walked to the Eiffel Tower, so it can be done and we enjoyed the walk. We took the Metro back to the hotel, this was 13 stops away and cost around 3 Euros each, with the trip taking about 25 minutes. We got off at Republique station and walked approximately 5 minutes back to the hotel. I will stay at this hotel again.

Stayed here in June 2012 based on all the good reviews i read on trip advisor - and it did not disappoint - we did however make the mistake of booking the cheapest room and when we got there realised its the size of a closet! luckily they managed to change our room to the next size up and we paid the difference. The bathrooms are a bit small but overall the rooms were comfortable - every room gets an ipad with recommendations - which was such a great touch! The people that work there are super friendly and helpful, they would even sit and chit chat with us every day when we came down for free drinks in the afternoon. it has such a home-y feel to it. The area was not very central and we had to take the metro. I would recommend this hotel if you have been to Paris before and want to get away from the main busy areas in the summer- however i would not really recommend it to someone who is going to paris for the first time. The hotel is right on the Canal and in the evening many people would sit outside with a drink and play their guitars. We tried out a restaurant nearby called "le Chemise" which was probably some of the best food ive had in Paris. Breakfast at the hotel was also a delight.. i loved all the freshly baked goods. We had someone from the hotel pick us up and he was also really nice - arrange a car if you can - our driver gave us a lot of info about the area. But i repeat if you want to see the louvre or the more touristy areas of Paris then it is a bit of a hassle having to take the metro.

We stayed at Le Citizen on the weekend of 25th January 2013, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. On arrival we were warmly welcomed, given an iPad for use during our stay (a very nice touch!) and told about the many other perks offered by the hotel such as the free minibar (restocked every day) and free drinks between 6-7pm every evening.

We stayed in one of the Zen suites and were lucky enough to have a view of the top of the Eiffel tower from our room (fantastic to see it lit up at night!). The room was modern, clean and stylish. The only thing that we were slightly disappointed about was that our "king size bed" was actually 2 twin beds pushed together, which meant my husband and I were effectively sleeping in separate beds on our romantic weekend away. It wasn't the end of the world though....

The hotel staff (in particular, John) were incredibly helpful booking restaurants for us every evening and booking taxis when required. They went out of their way to help us and seemed genuinely interested to chat with us.

Breakfast was a lovely selection of croissants, bread, cereals and eggs were also available upon request.

We would definitely recommend this hotel to others, and wouldn't hesitate to go back there in the future.

As a family of four we stayed in the Zen Apartment, which certainly provided more space than any other hotel that we have previously visited in Paris. We had very comfortable beds and good showers. There was absolutely no street noise, at night, when we stayed there in January. If you like to be in the centre of all the popular Parisian tourist attractions then you might want to choose a hotel that is somewhat more central. We found getting around by taxi was not a problem. The staff were always polite and extremely helpful. They provided us with many lovely recommendations, particularly local restaurants and went out of their way to help us with our hire car problems.
I cannot say that the breakfast was fantastic but it was included in the price. We really
appreciated free WIFI, that allowed us to call Australian land lines for free. The hotel is definitely incredibly good value for Paris.

Stayed at Le Citizen in October 2012 after arriving by Eurostar at Gare Du Nord - hotel very easy to get to from this train station, a couple of stops away on the metro followed by a less than 5 minute walk. Friendly welcome at reception where we were provided with the complimentary ipad for our stay and the room we had for the first night (a City L) was excellent - great space, lovely comfy bed, super bathroom and nice view across to the canal - being on a lower floor it could get quite noisy outside with traffic at certain times, but apart from that no complaints. The next day we transferred to a City room for the remainder of the stay due to having booked fairly late in the day, but that was a nice space as well, with lots of natural light, although somewhat smaller that the initial room. In both rooms there was a free mini bar which had some beer and fruit juice stocked every day and the in-the-price breakfast was very relaxed every day, as well as a good selection and tasty. The location of the hotel is fantastic, in a very bohemian area (i.e. trendy!) with plenty of good restaurants, bars and independently run shops nearby as well as good transport links. My partner and me would happily go back to this place next time we visit Paris - recommended.

Room Tip: Would recommend the City L rooms - good value and a nice space.
