“Busy, but worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013 via mobile

We visited Montmartre last year and I don't think there were as many aggressive peddlers and beggars this time. Last year we were accosted by a lot of young people (teenaged and early 20s); this year that didnt happen except for a few artists offering free sketches. There was also a group offering "free hugs" but they didn't bother individuals passing by. Be aware though, this is an extremely busy place (we were there on a Saturday) with the crowds so thick that it was hard to move or get close to the artists' stands. The Sacred Heart church was also packed, not to sit down, but people shuffled around the perimeter of the inside clockwise and then as a pack shuffled out. The steps were also very crowded, but it was a gorgeous day and I can inderstand why everyone was out...it's been cold and rainy and a beautiful day is cause for celebration. Montmartre is definitely worth a visit. We took the funiculaire up the mountain, for which you need a regular metro ticket. Also, should you arrive at the Abbesses metro stop, take the elevator up to the top, otherwise you will be climbing and climbing and climbing a lot of stairs!

“Shops & sights”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

Although it was really busy, it's an experience not to be missed. Problems with 'artists' constantly pestering us to draw portraits, but some good stuff in the market and great little shops.

“Interesting!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

A very interesting place to visit. Much artistic history. Walk around and enjoy the art and ambiance. Not a place to eat or drink wine. The food is overpriced for the quality and the wine is just for tourists.

“Lovely area for a walking tour!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

We heeded the advice of many travelers and approached Montmartre from the Lamarck metro stop so as to completely avoid the aggressive scammers and pickpockets. We actually followed the route of a self-guided walking tour that I found online at Paris 48. I would recommend downloading a tour or taking an organized tour to get the most out of your walk - it's nice to know a little bit about the history of what you are seeing. We used the TA City Guide app to locate a cafe for lunch (we chose Le Consulat - nice people, good food). The only time we hit crowds was at the Basilica and the Place du Tertre - other than that, we had a lovely relaxing walk around this picturesque neighborhood!

Note - We did finish our tour at the Moulin Rouge as some of our party wanted to see the famous landmark - those of you with children need to know that this area is one sex shop after the other with graphic items on display. My almost-18-year-old daughter was rather surprised and proceeded to tell her friends about it later - those of you with small children might want to avoid this area or be prepared to answer a lot of potentially uncomfortable questions.

“Interesting little district”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013

Had a wonderful time in the district. Ate some fresh maccorrons, that were to die for from a local store near the square adjcent to the Basilica. Lots of painters are roaming around.
