“UNHAPPY EXPERIENCE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

A LOVELY HOTEL BUT A VERY UNHAPPY EXPERIENCE
It makes me extremely sad to have to write this negative review of Hotel L’Abbaye Saint Germain in Paris ; but it is deserved. And let me say that until this recent event, our stays had been very lovely.
We have stayed at the Hotel L’Abbaye many many times over the years (even staying there with our families for over a week after the 9/11 disaster), often staying in the Hotel’s premium rooms or its suites with outdoor terraces and were thus surprised by the bad experience we had last month. In the Spring of 2013 we reserved a “ junior suite” for September 2013 and had specifically requested one of the two junior suites on the ground floor featuring conservatory areas and outdoor seating areas. Very special. This ” junior suite” was confirmed by the Hotel at a rate of over $700 per night. In view of our long history with the Hotel and our specific request for one of the two junior suites on the ground floor, we anticipated that our request would be honored. Instead, when we arrived we were brusquely given a room on the fourth floor, Room 42, with , obviously no conservatory area and no outdoor area. Room 42 was a very nice room but in no way a “junior suite.” Thus, we were not, and are not, happy. We understand that no particular room can be promised ( or such is what the Hotel proclaims), but a room type that conforms to the requested room can be promised for over $700 per night . And for the Hotel to call any room it wants a “junior suite” does not make it a junior suite—particularly when it has none of the physical amenities communicated by the hotel and that the confirmed guest is clearly anticipating.
Shame on you Hotel L’Abbaye—after all of these years. It must be that the need to check-in some earlier guest in the a true “junior suite” trumps any loyalty to long time guests —even where that loyalty has been confirmed by a deposit many months in advance..

Dear Guest,

We would like to thank you for your interest and taking time to let a comment on Tripadvisor.

It's with a lot of regrets that we have learned that you have had a unpleasant stay at l'Abbaye, and we would like to reply you with all the respect due at a loyal guest like you.

You have reserved a Junior Suite at 535.00 EUR per night from 12 September to 18 September 2013, and you have requested a room n°3, which is a Junior suite situated on the ground floor. During your booking process, you have been informed that your room preference couldn't be guaranteed, therefore when you arrived, you have been accommodated in one of our contemporary Junior Suite on the fourth floor, because on the ground floor your room was busy since long time for a long stay.

As you know, we are a small independent hotel with 44 rooms and nevertheless we are trying to reply correctly to all preferences made. We would like that you be sure that we have made all things possible to satisfy you during your stay and we regret that wasn't enough.

We hope to have the pleasure to see you again very soon at l'Abbaye. We wish to apologize for all troubles caused during your stay and we remain at your disposal for further information.

Yours faithfully

Ranked #6 in Tripadvisor? COME ON! The hotel might have a nice patio where you can enjoy a quiet breakfast; it is also located in a convenient area if you like jogging (so you can do it along the river or around Luxemburg Gardens) or like to stroll up and down Saint German Boulevard, or perhaps discover the Pantheon. That's the positives we found, but when you're discovering a city, having heavy baggage because you're going to enjoy a long trip and are discovering a new city, therefore you walk all day, you need a nice room, that's pretty much what you need at the start and at the end of your day.

So, let me quickly describe the classic room: it is ridiculously tiny, as much as that two people cannot walk on the same side, only one slim person can do it with difficulty whereas the other will have to step up on the bed to give way to the other. I felt asphyxiated; thank God it had a window. The beds is composed of two single beds joined together, but as the beds have wheels, then there is no way the beds stay in one place so they move all night which can cause insomnia and back pain. Ah!, the pillow is so tiny that your head hardly covers its size, so great for neck problems!.Also the tiny shower let the water sprinkle all around, so better remove the toilet paper and bin first.

What a horrible experience, fortunately it was only one night. 275 euros and we spent a terrible night; and the next day as beautiful as the patio has been described for other members, the breakfast is not nice, we had coffee and assorted basket of bread, but not of good quality. Very very disappointed!!!

Dear Guest,

We would like to thank you for taking time to put a comment on Tripadvisor,

We are sorry to learn that your stay wasn't live up to your requirements. Our hotel since forty two years tries to improve himself every years, in order to give the best possible moment to our guests.

We understood that the classic room has seemed a little bit small, we understood your comment but we would like to clarify some points with you. Our Classic rooms reply to the french hotel four star standards, and are cosy, quite and decorated with a french traditional touch. The room sizes are specified on our website with all descriptions and pictures.

However hotel de l'Abbaye has other rooms, such as deluxe rooms, junior suites and duplex apartments with terrace. We are sure that we have some rooms able to respond correctly to your requests.

Concerning our breakfast, which is a really good point for our hotel, our food is fresh and bought every morning in a french baker near our hotel, and it's offered for all guests.

We hope to have the pleasure to see you again at l'Abbaye to let you enjoy the quality of our services and of our rooms in better conditions. We wish to apologize for all troubles caused during your stay and we remain at your disposal for further information.

Yours faithfully

If you're looking for a small romantic hotel with a beautiful garden, lovely breakfast room and common spaces, charming guest rooms and excellent staff on a quiet street in a terrific neighborhood, this is the place to stay. Make sure you reserve at least 3 nights to make the most of the hotel. We booked a standard room and loved it --- comfy, cheerful with light thru the window, charming in decor and well laid out, with a roomy modern bathroom. Very quiet at night and the hotel itself felt intimate and private helped by its courtyard entry set back from the small street rue Cassette off the Rue de Rennes. Breakfasts quite tasty. Due to the rainy, chilly weather we enjoyed breakfast in a glassed-in room overlooking the garden, instead of dining on the patio, which we imagine would be wonderful to take advantage of when weather better. We dined one night in the hotel wanting a light meal without having to leave the premises and greatly appreciated the availability of food and drink throughout the day and evening. Other guests seemed to agree, sharing drinks and snacks with friends in one of the two charming 'living' rooms near the hotel entrance. The front desk staff were always very helpful and accommodating; in fact, every staff person we encountered was extremely pleasant and attentive, from the door man to the housekeepers to the wait staff. The hotel is above average in price, yet we felt well worth the cost for the very special and memorable atmosphere and service provided. We greatly look forward to our next stay.

If you want a true Parisian hotel experience, this is the place. Situated in Saint Germain De Pres, the hotel offers all that one would hope for: the rooms good sized, the staff helpful yet not fawning, the location exceptional, quaint and quiet. An oasis of calm. We'll be back.

We had a wonderful stay at Hotel de L'Abbaye in August. It's in a great spot in the St. Germain neighborhood and located well for walking to many sites almost everywhere by foot (or to the Batobus or Metro). It has that boutique hotel feel, lovely Parisian decor, and we enjoyed the outdoor terrace for coffee and croissants daily. Other notables: the bathrooms and rooms were very clean and appointed nicely and the service during our entire stay was excellent. When you think of going to Paris, staying in an apartment or a boutique hotel matches the experience much better than staying at a large hotel, even those with four stars. I would far prefer to stay in a great neighborhood boutique hotel during visits to Paris -- and would absolutely come back to Hotel de l'Abbaye.

At first we weren't thrilled with this hotel. We are used to modern, American hotels. This hotel is small and very Parisian. I knew the standard rooms would be much smaller than we were used to, so I opted for the "apartment" room. It was two story, with full (very modern) bath and living area downstairs and bedroom, balcony and toilet up. The decoration is also very Parisian, with floral walls, matching curtains, etc. after adjusting to the very different decor of this room, we really loved it. Very comfortable and very very roomy. The front desk reception was amazing. They were so helpful. Made dinner reservations for us and even printed out maps of places we were going so we would know how to get there. Room service was great, although we only ordered sodas in the evening and coffee and breads in the morning. The lobby area was so beautiful and intimate and had a lovely patio area. My only compliant would be that the room had no mini bar or fridge. It would be nice to have cold drinks handy. And it certainly had room for one. The hotel is in a great location on a very quiet street but just short walk to the main blvd. not sure what the standard rooms look like, but this apartment room was really special.

My husband and I had rented an apartment in the 7th for our two week stay in Paris, however it was unavailable for the last few days of our trip. Based on the excellent reviews, we booked those last few days in this charming hotel. We wished we would have spent our entire two weeks here! Out of the way of the hustle and bustle of frantic tourists, this establishment was a welcome oasis of calm from the moment we walked through the doors. Welcoming, gracious staff and comfortable decor greeted us. We checked in too early for our room to be ready so they invited us to sit in the courtyard at the back of the hotel and enjoy breakfast. Enjoy it we did! The courtyard is so beautiful and relaxing, I felt as though I never wanted to leave. We spent our last days in Paris walking around Saint-Germaine, spending a great deal of time in the Luxembourg Gardens. The hotel courtyard also figured prominently in our time as it was a lovely place to have drinks and a light meal in the evening and breakfast was always charming. We will definitely be back.
