“Better than the Cathedral, and a lot less expensive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Take this free tour just west of the Cathedral, and learn about the history of the settlement of Paris and the development of the city and its culture. Fascinating look at Roman ruins and the beginnings of the City of Light

“Interesting if you have time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

We visits the crypt using our Paris Museum Paris on afternoon when the line to get into the cathedral was extremely long. I'm not sure we would have visited without the pass but we really enjoyed it once in. The space itself shows some of the archeological finds of the buildings that once occupied the location of Notre Dame. The most interesting element was the interactive video screens that allowed you to watch the cathedral being built at various stages in its history. My 10 year old son was enthrall led by this. It was a great education for him when we returned to visit the cathedral the next day.

“Extremely interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

You must use an audio guide for this, or you will have no real idea of what you are seeing. The crypt has ruins from Roman, medieval and later periods, and tells you the history if the Ile de la Cité. It also has some really cool touch-screen animations that let you look at the construction of Notre Dame, and what the thermal baths would have been like. I found this way more interesting than Notre Dame Cathedral itself!

“One of the most interesting parts of the trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

If you like your history in short doses, this is the place for you. Packed into an area not much larger than a basketball court are Roman ruins (including a section of the quai built to keep the Seine in check), medieval foundations, a chunk of Paris sewer, and part of the foundations of the Hotel Dieu. This is a cross section of a city that has been inhabited for approximately 2,000 years. The audio guide is decent but the French descriptions are more informative. This is a hard core history site and should be approached as such. My husband and I found it utterly fascinating.

“Use your museum pass.. Or pass on this one.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013 via mobile

I love the city's historic sights, but this one is seriously lacking in 'bang for buck'. While you walk in and are greeted by large expanses of excavated ruins, you cross the entry gates and quickly realize you've already seen the best part. Sadly, there are no refunds.

If you already spent the coin and purchased a city-wide museum pass, swing through and check it out. Otherwise, check out the gift shop at the entrance (where you can look into the excavated area and get almost as much from the experience, for free)
