“Good if you have the Museum Pass”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

Stopped in after a visit to the Cathedral. It's in FRONT of the cathedral, due west, btw. It's a pile of excavated rocks. Did a quick walk through. Would have been mad if I had to pay a separate fee to get in. There's a lot to read, if you are so inclined.

“Not Worth It...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

We, like other posters, were under the assumption we were going into the Crypts of Notre Dame. That is not what these are. I know that was our own fault but it was not really worth it. Luckily the charge was only 4 Euro's and there was only two of us. It was basically the foundations of old buildings. Really old buildings. So if that sounds like something that would be interesting to you, check these out!

“Fascinating Hidden Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2012

The entrance to this hidden surprise is tucked away in the forecourt to Notre Dame Cathedral. You have to search, but it is easy once you find it.

Downstairs are ancient Roman ruins from the earliest city that stood on this spot. This was my fourth visit to Paris and I did not realise these ruins existed. I had seen the ruins in Bath (UK) but these blew me away (to think I was underneath the city of Paris!!!!).

The Romans were so advanced with their architecture, tiling and structures - they even used heating systems beneath the floors (incredible).

It seemed very quiet in here (7 people including us) but it was well worth a visit and so exciting to discover all it had to offer about this city's ancient history. If you get a chance, do visit! This is a part of Paris' history that the history books forget to tell us about.

“fascinating display of Paris origins.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2012

Surprised at the huge crowd above ground admiring the Cathedral but uninterested by a display of where it all started. One of only 3 sites in Paris showing the remains of Roman occupation. Thermae Hotel Cluny and Arenes Lutece beng the others. Not just a display of excavated remains but accompanied by a fascinating bi-lingual description of the history of the growth of Paris into a huge City.

“if you are into ancient history, go here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2012

This is the excavation of the original settlement of Paris, on the Ile de la Cite. You will see 2000 years of history unearthed in the center of Paris, right in front of Notre Dame. This museum shows the history and development of the city from the Parisii to the Romans, to the Franks, up to the 1700s. See the ruins of the original Roman city. My wife and I are into this sort of thing so it was interesting to us. I can see how it would not be worthwhile for a lot of people.
