Paris hotels make manhattan look cheap. That said, hotel was clean and quiet. Common areas a little too "over the top" with snakeskin plumbing fixtures and oversized (uncomfortable) furniture in lobby bar. Room was comfortable but could use more storage. Wireless was almost non-existent in the room. Location was fine since the metro gets you anywhere you want to go anyway. Staff was friendly and they all speak English.

Just returned from five days at the Banke Hotel in Paris. As background, let's just stipulate that Paris hotels are expensive, and their rooms small, compared to just about anywhere. Thus it's not worth saying the room was small for the money. Of course it was small for the money...this is Paris. So let me start with what I liked about the place.

First off, they had a room ready for us at 8 AM, when normal check-in is 2 PM. Man, is THAT a fabulous discovery when you've just gotten off the flight from JFK at 6:30 AM. We had time to shower, decompress, have something to eat before a day of sightseeing with a friend. Fabulous. Furthermore, we had booked a deluxe room, and they upgraded us to a suite. That was pretty impressive. Room 406 is above the entrance on Rue La Fayette, and while I think the windows were double-glazed and not triple-glazed, we never heard a sound; also the shades are such that you can keep out the light in the morning if you want. The bathroom was huge (needlessly huge, actually, and that's a trade-off), hot water was great, bed was larger than an American queen but less ample than a king, with a great mattress, and breakfast was free. All of this may be because we are members of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World's Club, and use them a lot when we travel, but so what? It's free to join.

The free breakfast was fantastic. It's the usual spread, except that instead of some dry prosciutto they have -- I kid you not-- lots of Jamon Iberico di Bellotta. Do you know how much that costs? The breads were wonderful, fruits and cereals very good, and they cook eggs to order and make you cappucino if you want. Simply a great, ample breakfast to take you through the day.

The hotel's location is, I suppose, what would be described as a central business area of no great distinction, a couple of blocks from the Galleries Layayette and its subway stop. This is not the Faubourg St. Honore or the Rue Royale, but it's fine. It's better to be on the other side of the Garnier Opera; it's also more expensive. I was perfectly content with the location.

The staff was helpful and spoke English, which is good because despite being born in France, my French is terrible. There are plenty of electrical outlets in the room, which is unusual. You cannot possibly have more things that need plugging in than they have outlets. And internet is free. Wow!

So what didn't I like? Well, Room 406 is large but circular because of the cupola over the entrance, and that means that despite being a fairly large sleeping area and classified as a suite, there is no straight wall against which to put a desk. Your laptop is strictly a laptop. I disagree with the management that there is adequate storage--we were hard put to hang all our dress-up clothes in the closets provided, the shelf space in the closets was not adequate, and the round room had, of course, nowhere to put a dresser. YOU may not need that much hanging space, but we did, because we were going to the opera a couple of times and to dinner with friends after drinks at their apartment and then to dinner on another night at Senderens, etc. It's not enough storage space. And the lighting is really atrocious--especially in the bathroom, where the lack of a light directly over the basin means one can not see the top of his head. Try parting your hair in the dark. And one other thing--there is a very strong, cloying smell of incense in the somewhat gaudy lobby which was once a bank lobby. I suppose the hotel is owned by someone who culturally relishes incense. I can do without.

So that's a completely honest assessment.

Dear guest,

Thank you for choosing us for your stay in Paris and for sharing your experience here in Tripadvisor.

I must say that this is a very interesting advice as I find it very constructive and objective and it's an unvaluable tool to keep on improving, so thank you again.

We're pleased to know that the staff, breakfast, room and free wifi have been quite at your expectations level; of course we will focus our attention on the negative points and we will work it hard to avoid this space matters in the near future.

We will be happy to welcome you back anytime you want; do not hesitate in contact me to arrange all the details for your next reservation.

I found the hotel very nice. Booked a suite for us and our 6 year old daughter and it was comfortable enough. Decoration among the best in Paris, worth seeing it, food is excellent, atmosphere is fantastic, staff very useful, and extremely well located (my wife appreciated particularly the closeness of La Fayette). An absolute recommendation.

Room Tip: Rooms are in general small (which is typical in Paris hotels), pay the extra price of a suite, it is...

Hotel Banke is a lovely old bank building with an attractive lobby topped by a dome. Reviews noted that rooms were small so I booked an executive room for one person to have extra space. Unfortunately the room turned out to be ridiculously small, especially for the premium price paid. There was about a half meter of space between the bed and walls on both sides, no night tables, desk, or any furniture with drawers. Decor was very modern with a small flat screen TV mounted on the wall. Could not get a full phone signal, and wifi although free, did not work at all in the room. Had to sit in lobby to get wifi, which was noisy and smelled heavily of wood smoke. Fitness area had sauna and steam, but workout area was too tiny to even attempt to work out with the limited amount of free weights. Didn't try breakfast as it was an additional 29€. Overall not a good value. There are better choices in Paris.

Dear guest,

Thank you for choosing us for your stay in Paris and for taking your time to share your experience here in Tripadvisor.

We do regret that your time with us was not fully satisfying and we really hope that you ever change your advice and give us a second opportunity.

I'm sorry but I disagree with you concerning your advice about the room. The executive room has two night tables, a large sofa and a table to work on or just have a room service. Furthermore, there is a wardrobe wide enought to allow a person to get in. This can be see in our site, where you can find all the rest of the details that make this kind of room a very good choice.

All in all, we will be more than pleased to welcome you back. Do not hesitate in contact me to arrange all the details for your next reservation.

A really nice Parisian hotel in a good location in Paris. Great decor especially in the lovely reception area. I had a suite and it was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. Perfect for a romantic break or stay with friends. Found the staff very accommodating.

Good things-nice location in the Opera district. Staff could not have been more helpful to us. This is a 3 year old hotel that is in an 200 year old bank. The lobby is gorgeous. It has an unusual incense that permeates the lobby-I loved it, but if you are sensitive to scents it might be a problem. The bedroom was very clean and the beds were comfortable. The en suite bathrooms were large.
Not so good-the size of the room. I ordered what was called a king bed-really just two singles put together. Had a laugh over the dresser that was painted onto the wall. Very little room to store ones belongings. The restaurant Josefin-I would not recommend.
Did find a wonderful place called Chez Jean close by to have breakfast at a great price.

Dear guest,

Thank you for sharing your experience in the Banke Hotel here in Tripadvisor.

We do appreciate your comments on the building with is exactly what you say, and old bank turned up in a hotel by respecting the main elements. We are pleased too that you find the staff welcoming and charming.

There are four categories of rooms here at the Banke, so it's not difficult to find the one that suits you. In fact, if you are not feeling right, we are always pleased to find together the appropriate one.

I'm glad you enjoyed the painting on the wall; it's very important to keep on having fun!

I hope we can welcome you back; do not hesitate in contact me to arrange all the details for your next reservation.

This 'superior' twin bedded room was the smallest room I have ever stayed in..There was no space for luggage, and the twin beds could not even be separated. Some staff were helpful, restaurant staff left a lot to be desired.

Room Tip: Try another hotel!

Dear guest,

Thank you for choosing us for your stay in Paris.

We do regret that your time with us was not satisfying at all. The superior room has two wardrobes and what I think is enough space to leave the baggage. All in all, there are many different rooms and we always listen to our guests if they are not feeling fine with the one they get. I'm afraid that in this case we've learn that from your comments here in Tripadvisor, so no way to react.

I'll be more than pleased to welcome you back anytime you want. I hope next time you can really experience a good moment with us.
