Had seen reviews of the land train on here so made a point of adding it into things we wanted to do. I really wanted to see the Moulin rouge & Sacre Coeur but travelling with kids, i didnt want to be walking unknowingly into a Red Light District.
As you come out of Blanche Metro you can immediately see the land train stop in front of you. There were 2 trains when we arrived & the first one was packed and ready to go. We took a little wander down the road to get to a shop (we walked along the middle to avoid any dodgy windows) and the walk was fine. Having been a bit concerned about taking the kids to this area i was quite relieved to see it was all fine during the day. Obviously there are a few dodgy shop names but it was more risque than seedy & i dont' think the kids saw anything i was unhappy with (kids are 10 & 12).
We came back and boarded the 2nd train & paid. The guide/driver spoke to us in English as he'd heard me talking to the kids. He was very pleasant and spoke to the kids too. There were a few families on the train too.
On the way up to Sacre Coeur there was no chat from the driver until we reached the top. It took us about 20 mins & when we arrived the driver told us return times in english & french so we knew where and when to find the train.
Our return journey we had a different driver, again really pleasant & spoke to us in pretty good english. This time we had a talk on the way down with him pointing out places of interest and giving us a bit of history as we passed landmarks. Although English was 2nd we didn't miss anything and generally passed things just after he'd talked about them.
On the final part of the journey you see a bit more of the Red Light District, the driver points it out as this, so you have time to distract the kids away from the shops on the side of the road if you need to! As i said, it's pretty tame in daylight though.
We all really enjoyed the trip, our legs were aching from the previous days travels so for us it was perfect. The trip is pretty bumpy, which added to the fun for the kids. I was also quite impressed by the driver, the pick up location was absolutely packed with people everywhere, how he got that train through those couple of roads without anyone getting their feet run over i'll never know!
