“Resistance Museum”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

As others have said you could spend the whole day at the Citadel. There are a great many things to see and it is definitely worth a visit. I'd only add a warning for those considering viewing the Resistance Museum. I recall it being all in French with some German. The exhibition is of a desperate and violent period. I felt very lucky it all happened before I was born. It has graphic images of such things as hangings, executions and dead bodies. Once you are in there it is not easily cut short. You are on a threaded pathway. You either go through to the end or turn around to get out. By the time I was half way through I'd had enough and was looking for some fresh air. If you are interested in the period, read French and don't mind the images you could spend hours in there.

“Another Vauban's signature”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

Wherever you are in Besançon, you cannot miss this massive construction designed by Vauban and standing high above the city. I am surprised no one has ever mentioned yet that this is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built there to defend France borders from any invasions at the time. Like all Vauban buildings it is really impressive. The view from the top is truly stunning.

“Massive surprise - So much to see and do”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

I was attracted by the museum of the resistance but didn't expect the range of attractions available on the premises all covered by the same entrance fee. You could easily spend the whole day here browsing the museums, the zoo and the ramparts. In addition there are several food outlets including a brasserie type operation.
It is possible to walk up to the fortifications but there is parking available at the top for a fee of 5 Euros covering a whole day.

We only had three hours which was not even suffiicient for the Museum of the Resistance which includes the history of the Nazi party and the holocaust. It is an extremely moving experience but also very harrowing as there are explicit pictures of torture and executions. I would advise against taking your children in there!

However these awful things need to be remembered and the brave men and women of the Maquis need to be saluted. They gave their lives to buy the peace and prosperity which my generation have enjoyed.

“Well worth the steep walk......”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

Dont be put off by people saying its a climb, it is a steep walk up hill , my wife and i were staying by the Cathedral and we are not fit it took us 20 minutes to get to top, it would be tricky with push chair and dont try with a wheelchair .
It is so worth the it when you get to the top it is beautiful to look out across the town and further !
We paid for everything and got a audio guide which i would recommend for only 2€, this bought the whole place alive with information ! well worth it.
The zoo is not everyones taste but it does serve a very good purpose . The highlight was the second world war memorial exhibition ............amazing but shocking

“Worth the climb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

Fascinating place with a great story. Well kept and tidy. Suggest you get a guide to show you round - only cost 1.5 euros each and made such a difference to our visit. After the tour, you are then free to look around the zoo, museum, aquarium and displays. Excellent value for money.
