“A good hotel in a lovely city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2013

Tours is a lovely and lively place and an ideal base for the Loire Valley. Hotel Criden is on one of the main routes into Tours from the motorway so is easy to find yet is within an easy walk of the main shopping, eating and tourist venues in the city. Being on a main road there is, of course, some traffic noise but the double glazing does shield the most of it.

A very friendly welcome from, we guess, the owner was conducted in English at reception and we were given the keys to our room. The room is well laid out with plenty of space and, though maybe a little tired looking, was clean and comfortable. There is no air-con but, being a chilly October, this was not needed anyway and the electric radiator in the room was more than adequate for warmth.

The bathroom looked recently refurbished to a very high standard with lovely tiles and suite and a walk-in shower. It was spotlessly clean. Only liquid soap is provided but we always take our own to hotels just in case which, this time, came in handy. The wall heater did not function but, within an hour of mentioning this at reception, it had been repaired so we were very impressed by the service.

Breakfast was a simple affair of cold meats, cheese, yogurts, croissants and so on and not expensive. Our only criticism was that the coffee was not hot and only being provided with cold milk for it made it merely tepid. Very un-French!

Car parking is available, for a charge, at the rear of the hotel in a private area but one has to then walk round the block to get into the hotel unless the receptionist goes to meet you.

One quirk that I must mention is the ceremony of the keys. We normally ignore hotel requests to leave keys at reception when going out, other than when we check out of course, as we don't particularly want anyone to know when our room is unoccupied. The first time we tried this we were caught by the receptionist and specifically asked for our key so we handed it over. On the second day we were leaving in the car to go for a drive up the valley - and before we had even got out of the car park the receptionist waved us down to collect our key from us! My French is insufficient to start a discussion as to why they need to keep MY key to MY room where all MY current worldly goods are stored but it would be an interesting one.

The 'key quirk' aside, it was a lovely hotel and one worth considering for your stay in Tours and the Loire Valley.

Excellent hotel with nice rooms, very clean and very friendly staff. Perfect for a city trip, for a couple or for a family/group of friends. I would recommend this hotel to others as I was very happy with it.

Only a couple of minutes walk to the hotel, which is situated on a main road. Room a good size and bathroom also large, with a hairdryer. Staff excellent and all spoke perfect English, very helpful giving directions. Tourist Information office, one block away on the same road. Very comfy bed. About a 5 minute walk to Centre Ville and the trams, a bit further to the River, but all flat and easy walking. I would stay here again. Excellent value for money.

Whilst this hotel is not the most glamorous one I've ever stayed in, it was fine for stop-overs on our way to and from the south of France and I quite liked it's "art gallery" style with photos of the Eiffel Tower and clocks showing the time in different parts of the world in the lobby.

On both of our visits we were dealt with by a really pleasant woman who spoke English quite well. We always try to speak French but she did make life easier for us, especially when I had to ring up on the way back and tell her we were going to be late.

We drove and were able to park in their garage overnight for a small charge (I think it was 8 euros). On the way over we were parked outside the garage, still on their premises but I'm not sure how secure the car actually was but on the way back we were actually in the garage which was a lot more secure, albeit a bit tight!

Our room was OK and I particularly loved the kind of 1960s style of the bathroom but because we were a family in a triple room we had to have a room at the front of the hotel and my partner and son were disturbed by lorries on the main road during the night. Also, we had booked through an agency and on our booking form it stated we would have a balcony. There were balconies attached to rooms above ours but we did not have one. Not really an issue for us but if someone had been looking forward to sitting out on a balcony, then they would have been disappointed.

Another negative was that we didn't have any tea and coffee-making facilities so one night had to order and pay separately for a cup of tea.

There's a nice terrace at the back of the bar/dining area on the first floor. The bar, however, never seemed to be open.

The breakfasts were fine - average Continental-style breakfasts with pleasant staff in attendance.

The hotel is close enough to the station to make it a good bet for people travelling by train and it is also a very short walk to the centre of Tours, which is where we went for our meals. I was a little nervous walking back to the hotel at night though, as it is a little away from the hub of things and the area doesn't look as though it's one of the best. Still, we never had a problem.

In conclusion, although this hotel isn't one of the best I've stayed in, it has a certain charm about it and by the second visit, I was really quite fond of it!

Room Tip: Request one at the back of the hotel, if possible and make sure you get a balcony if you want one.

We liked very much the hotel located very close to the railway station, which is very convenient to travel outside of Tours. The hotel is also very easy to find out (especially, if you travel by train). The personnel was friendly. The room (for 3 pers.) was spacious, all convenienves included, free wi-fi worked very well. The breakfest was very good.

Based on other reviews and photos of this hotel, I had great expectations of a hotel that exceeded expectations. This hotel did not meet my expectations. It has no charm and an unappealing exterior. We stayed two weekends broken by a bike tour of the chateaux in the Loire Valley. Our first weekend was about what I expected. The bathroom was modern and spacious. Our next weekend our double room was very small and the bathroom had room only for one person at a time. Also we lost WiFi and could only pay our hotel bill in cash as the credit card machine was inoperable. There is no air-conditioning so we had to keep our window open and we were kept up all night by a nearby night club. This is a classic case of you get what you pay for. It was not a bargain or great value.

This hotel is very close to the station and walking distance to the Old City and shopping. Lots of choices for eating places nearby. Our double room with en-suite was spacious, clean, comfortable and quiet. Free WiFi connection was excellent. French style breakfast was perfectly adequate. The reception staff were friendly and very helpful, and did a good job coping with our poor French!
