“Great location and friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2009

I stopped for three nights on a business trip and enjoyed the stay. The room was large, quiet, clean and comfortable. It was a little "tired" but perfectly acceptable. The bathroom was good, with a small but deep bath with shower over. The toilet was separate in a very small room which could be a little claustrophobic, but again it was clean and perfectly functional.

The staff were all very friendly and attentive without being overly so. The location is wonderful - the old town being a short stroll away. Here there are a number of really nice restaurants and bars.

This hotel was absolutely fine for our long weekend in the Loire Valley. It is quite close to the train station and bike rental, as well as the cute cobblestoned nightlife that Tours offers. The breakfast was great, and a the staff was pleasant. Our room was spacious enough and the bathroom was fine. The hotel, though was a bit dated, and needed both some renovations and redecoration. I would not rush back, but I would recommend it as a suitable place to stay for a weekend.

We stayed here for 3 nights and prior to arrival was a little concerned because of some of the reviews I'd read of the hotel. However, we were pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel LÚnivers.

The hotel staff are extremely charming and helpful and spoke great English. The hotel itself is well located, close to shops, cafes etc. It also had an accessable, undercover car park (12 euros a day) which was important for us.

Our room (on the second floor) was spacious and rather grand with wood panelling and red embossed wall paper. Sure it was a little worn in a shabby chic kind of way, but this is a 4 star hotel not a 5 star. It was quiet and the bed was comfy. Our bathroom had a window which overlooked the bedroom - unique!

The restaurant food was good, but the room lacked ambience and the decor was very bland. This struck me as unusual considering the rest of the hotel with its tromp lóiel lobby and old charm feel.

  • Liked — Old world charm and pleasant staff
  • Disliked — Price of accessing wi fi internet was way too high

Hotel l’Univers Tours, France

This hotel requires a substantial deposit at the time a reservation is made. Be careful of your finances, and keep your documentation handy.
When I checked out, I didn’t have the deposit verification in hand, which was my mistake. The front desk clerk insisted there had been no deposit, and charged me the full amount at check-out. That was OK, I could simply send the documentation, and request a credit on my credit card. Not so easy. They subsequently agreed I had paid the deposit, but instead of simply issuing a credit to the credit card (about a 20-second process, completed thousands of times a day), Hotel l’Univers wrote a (hard copy) letter to their bank requesting repayment to me. Three weeks later, after no action, I started a stop-payment procedure through my credit card. That inquiry finally resulted, after an additional two weeks, in a credit being issued. This simple function required a total of five weeks (and they’d had my deposit for four months before we arrived).
When I contacted hotel management, their surprising response was that some of their front desk people aren’t adequately trained, and I should simply get over it.
I will. In the meantime we’ll stay at Chateau Belmont.

This is a good hotel in all respects apart from the restaurant, where the service is arrogant and "couldn't care less" and the food can vary between merely dull and totally inedible. Stay here by all means, our room was good and location is great, once you have found it, but the restaurant, forget it and eat elsewhere!

Room was a little on the small side, needs a lot of updating (ie Bathroom) but has just been taken over by a large hotel chain with a quality standard so I think it will happen in time. The breakfast was well worth the money though.

We booked 3 rooms here for 3 nights in December. Checkin was very easy, staff were always pleasant and helpful. The location is excellent for walking all over the town. The rooms were larger than other hotels we stayed with on our holiday in France and Italy. Recommend Paul's Patisserie nearby for breakfast - good value and very friendly staff! We booked a driver for a day to take us (7 people) to a selection of the chateaux in the area and it was a magical day! We used Acco-Dispo and the driver was excellent and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend this method of seeing the area rather than hiring a car yourself or using coach travel with children.
