“Great Location. Decent hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012

This hotel said 4stars. It did not seem like a 4star hotel to me especially the room. Our 3star in Paris was nicer. All that said I liked the hotel just think it should have 3stars.

Best part was the location. We were taking the train and the hotel is very close so we could walk. Then it was an easy walk to the old section of town for a fun dinner. The talk of the main shopping street being ripped up is true but that's not the hotel's fault.

The reception staff was very nice, the beds comfortable, the bathroom OK and the room a decent size. The room was a decent size but completly bland.

Breakfast was a good spread of continental plus yogurt, fruit, bacon and scrambled egg.

First off, our ultimate stay here was great. That said, it started as much less than great. We booked the stay through a European travel agency at a slightly better rate than publicly available. While I suggest this route, you need to make sure you DEMAND one of the refurbished rooms. We were initially put in Room 514 (I think) and it was one of the worst rooms I have ever seen in my somewhat extensive European travels. Old, dingy, smelled like smoke. It was terrible and I did not feel comfortable having my wife stay in such a room and if you are used to American standards it is far worse than sub-par.

But, I called down to the very helpful hotel staff and asked for one of the renovated rooms based on reviews from this site. We were charged an extra $20 euro/night for one of the renovated rooms and that was kind of a shame. That said, the renovated room was excellent. Wood floors, high ceilings, large renovated bathroom, separate toilet, new HD TV.

Do yourself a favor and DEMAND a renovated room before you arrive. If you do that and get one of the renovated rooms you will really enjoy your stay. Otherwise, you will definitely not. It is almost hard to believe than anyone would agree to stay in the non-renovated rooms given what I know now. I understand that a hotel needs time to make improvements, but the disparity between the two rooms was almost comical.

We chose this hotel following recent good reviews, and were not disappointed. The first impression is of a rather insignificant entrance on a busy boulevard, but ,once through the (very large) revolving door, there is a fine two storey hall. Our room(215) faced the inner courtyard, and had no traffic noise. The refurbishment may not yet extend to other rooms, but ours was newly decorated, though incorporating some elegant older panelling and an openable frosted glass window from the bathroom (the toilet is separate) into the bedroom. The colour scheme leaves no doubt as to which country you are in.There is a splendid high ceiling, leaving room for a modern" chandelier",making an exact cube.Despite the vast size of the excellent firm bed there is plenty of room. The generous storage space would be improved by more hangars.
The bathroom, though with space for a bath, has a large shower which works well, but the waste outlet linkage for the basin was broken,as is usual with these gimcrack devices.
The airconditioning is silent and efficient, and the lighting is good, entirely free from dismal fluorescents. The room would look better without the ridiculously huge flatscreen TV,but at least it gets BBC2.There is a fast WiFi connection without complex passwords.
Breakfast is unremarkable. The bread and cheese are excellent, but the fruit cocktail includes undivided pineapple rings, and the bacon is mostly fat.The tea comes from a local specialist supplier, and is in minute amounts-two or thee bags required. We did not use the restuarant in the evening-there is so much choice in Tours.
This hotel offers exceptional quiet and comfort in a town centre, only a few minutes walk from the railway station.

Room Tip: Advise not fronting street.

I have stayed here many times over the last 10 years but this was the first time since bedrooms and dining room were refurbished by the Oceania Group.

We arrived on Friday for the Classic Lemans event, having booked on line in March.

The rooms had been advertised in an email the week before but I didn't know until I phoned the day before that we had been allocated the refurbished room. (thats not a complaint!).

Very pleased with the room and especially the car park (as usual) - with an old Porsche its best to have it secure!

The reception staff were excellent, the beds extremely comfortable, the bathroom, separate toilet and storage facilities in the room were more than anticipated so we had a very comfortable stay.

Breakfast was a good spread of continental plus bacon and scrambled egg.

Would I stay here again - of course!

Note.

A surprise (= shock) to me was the installation of TRAMS in Tours. The main shopping street, Wilson bridge and other streets were in the process of having tram tracks installed - no small project this - pavements ripped up, traffic disrupted and diverted, shopping sidewalks in the main street had tarmac ramps to get into the shops. Not very good for the disabled or older infirm people.

The target for completion is September 2013.

Dont hold your breath.

When you see the photos you will appreciate the scale of this.

Room Tip: Ask for refurbished room.

Just come back from our Brittany Ferries holiday to Tours and the Hotel D'Univers where we stayed for 5 nights. On the tariff board at the front of the hotel ,our room was classed as a suite at a cost of 404 euros a night. We would have been very dissapointed if that was what we had paid. As you went in the door, there was a lounge area with a sofa and a desk, all of which had seen better days and was very dark. Next there was a passage area, with a wardrobe and storage for suitcases which was useful. The bedroom was very strange in that it had 2 king sized beds which left very little room to get in and out of bed.It was so dark and the lighting and furniture were very old fashioned. The bed was very comfortable and the room was kept clean.

We had breakfast and that was excellent with plenty of choice, although some days, we felt as if we were the only people staying in the hotel.

Position is great. Next to the wonderful town hall, very near the station and shops and restaurants.. Parking is difficult and expensive. There are roadworks everywhere as they are putting in a new tramway ( not the hotel's fault )

Overall we had a good holiday but we probably wouldn't stay in Tours or at the Univers again. We realise we prefer the smaller towns like Amboise and Chinon.

This hotel in the centre of Tours is convenient for the railway station and an easy walk to shops and the old town, and makes an excellenent base for touring the Loire region. After reception you enter into a large well furnished lobby and it's very impressive - a rather grand staircase is in front of you mounting to landings and corridors from which the rooms lead off. Look upwards in the lobby and you will be struck by the mural panels of famous people who have stayed here, ranging from Sugar Ray Robinson to King Edward VII and Edith Piaf to Churchill. The rooms are on five floors and I stayed in a clean triple room with a huge double bed and a separate smaller room leading off with a single bed, There were adequate chairs, desks and a sofa but their quality was somewhat downmarket. The bathroom was small and the shower was an over-bath type. The WC was separate but very cramped. There is a restaurant but we only took breakfast which was varied and plentiful, including scrambled eggs and bacon. The bar was expensive, even by French standards. The staff and reception personnel were charming and helpful (I had problems connecting to the hotel Wi-Fi and the young man in reception took time and trouble to resolve them.)

You soon notice that the hotel is in urgent need of re-decoration/refurbishment; there are signs of wear and tear everywhere such as scuff marks on the walls and dusty display cabinets in the lobby. But you can forgive all this for the charm and quirkiness and the hotel is warm and welcoming and I found its old fashioned ambience charming. The hotel was full with business conferences and tour groups so is obviously still popular. Oceania Hotels should spend some money on it and it would recover its previously pre-eminent position in Tours and the Loire Valley.
