“Great family friendly base for touring the Loire Valley”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2011

We stated at the Pierre & Vacances Residence Le Moulin des Cordeliers for a week in July with two small children (4 and 8 years old). We used the hotel to visit the Loire sites especially Loches, Amboise, Chenonceaux, and Azay le Rideau. The hotel is a residence inn, where the rooms have small refrigerators and kitchens.

We booked the one bedroom apartment for four people (the Appartement 2 pièces 4 pers option that was 28m2). The hotel web site offered some discounts not found on other sites. The apartment was on the ground floor in front of the pool. The interior had acceptable finishes (about 3 star in the US) and the bathroom looked renovated recently. Like most rooms (except those in the mill or moulin) our room had a patio with a table and chairs for eating. The kitchen was well equipped including a fresh cutting board and utensils such as sharp knives, wine openers (of course!), an oyster knife (wow!), and a fresh cutting board (they provide a new one for each guest). There was no vent in the kitchen above the stove.

The pool is a popular attraction as it seems to be unusual for hotels in the Loire. It is partially indoor and partially outdoor and is somewhat heated. They don't have the nuthugger requirement found at some pools in France. The pool was a reasonable size and clean.

The parking is at the back of the hotel by the rail station. Our GPS took us to the front gate, which is not used by cars. You need a "clicker" to get in the private lot, which you get with registration. Of course it is very convenient if you are coming by train. There was always plenty of parking.

The checkin is only open during normal business hours. There is some provision for picking up a key afterwards but this requires securing a code to a little mailbox. It is best to plan to arrive during normal hours.

At checkin you get a package with towels for each guest. Maid service is extra thus towels and sheets are not changed with normal room booking. Standard white towels are provided. I recommend bringing some additional beach towels if you plan to use the pool.

There is wireless available for a fee. The network seems to be available only near the reception area. Our room overlooked the reception and we only got coverage when the glass door was open. Have a more extensive wireless network would be great.

The area around the hotel is nice with Loches about a 15 minute walk and various stores and restaurants only a few minutes way. There is a nice path that goes along the Indre for miles. The the Office of Tourisme is right next to the rail station. There is nice super market within walking distance. On Wednesday morning there is a market, which is a great place to get nice cheese, wine, meat, and fish (there is no Poissonnerie in town though you can get fish at the super market).

Overall, the Pierre & Vacances Residence Le Moulin des Cordeliers makes a great place to stay for touring the Loire. It is family friendly, has a pool, and makes it easy to cook meals. The location of the Residence is very convenient for visiting Loches and for driving excursions to other chateaux without the traffic and crowds of other cities.

This place has some good and bad points but your stay will depend greatly on getting a room with a view overlooking the river and town. If you don't then your experience will be ordinary.

Loches is an interesting, historic town and a great location from which to explore the Loire. As we had 2 children in tow, some of the more charming and "authentically" French accommodation available in Loches would not have suited us. We thought this a safe bet but were disappointed on a number of levels.

After 12 hours of travel we reached the hotel and were informed that we had not paid and would have to pay again. We knew this not to be the case as payment had passed through our bank before we left but we had no way of proving this instantly. The confirmation we had from our agent was not sufficient for the hotel, apparently. The receptionist's English was not good and we found it difficult to explain our position. We were unable to contact our agent (the overseas number was barred) and after being held in suspicion all week it was sorted out the last day of our stay but without apology by the staff. On return the agents insisted they had emailed the hotel 2 days before our arrival saying that payment had been made. Notes, insisting on payment, were taped to our door during the stay but we were reluctant to double pay as getting a credit card refunds from a foreign country can be difficult. All a bit embarrassing and unnecessary really.

We thought we had booked a 2 bedroom apartment for the week but were shown to a ground floor apartment (opposite reception with no view or privacy) which had 2 rooms and it was tiny. We asked to be upgraded to a larger room, which they did without fuss, but it was reiterated by the receptionist that this was the room we booked. Fair enough, but it sure didn't look that small on the internet (do they ever) and was totally inappropriate for a family of four, for a week.

The new apartment was slightly bigger but had a lovely, large balcony overlooking Loches and eating our lunch/dinner/breakfast there was a highlight of our stay. So, get a balcony with a view.

Also, don't stay too long or the tiny beds (my husbands feet dangled over the edge) with their hot and hard foam mattresses will leave you with back ache and sleep deprived by the end of your stay. The summer must be unbearable. It was very clean but has no toaster, kettle (I know when in France) or oven but there seems to be enough glasses/crockery to run a small restaurant.

The heated pool was very good for the children and well maintained. It made the trip for them. An 8 year old can only stand so many chateau. There is a lovely park with a playground nearby too and the crepe restaurant was a hit with the kids too.

Good - view, balcony, pool, location, cleanliness, cheap.
Bad - Service/organisation, small rooms, hard beds and sofa, 8 euro to do a load of washing.

Roomy apartment with free parking. Near train station but very few trains and no noise. Good value.
