“Over-priced budget hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

Ended up here after finding the other Ibis hotel in Chartres full. The rooms were basic and the price of €92 a room doesn't reflect the quality of the hotel. The 3* Ibis was cheaper (€64) where as this is a 2 * hotel charging 4* prices. The rooms were like a Ballantines Hotels (great cheap places to stay). They even had the cheek to charge €8 for parking (free on the street). Will ot stay there again, I will find a better hotel on the edge of town.

Room Tip: Aked for a room at the front. Not like we did, overlooking the carpark.

Normally we stay at the ibis at Luce but decided this time we should visit the cathedral and so we booked the more central ibis.
The hotel is OK, but it's a bit battered and unfortunately the bathroom smelt of sewage. Room 236. Ibis I think you have a problem with your U bends.
The bed is the usual Ibis standard which was disappointing after sampling the superb mattress topping at the Ibis Sarlat the night before.

We have driven past Chartres many times over the years and have always thought we should one day stop here.

This year finally we stopped in Chartres and chose this hotel for its proximity to the Cathedral. Our room was on the third floor, not large but adequate for our needs and we had a view of the Cathedral. The bed was comfortable enough, I liked the shower and the desk arrangement was fine. We had an evening meal in the restaurant in the hotel and enjoyed a pizza each. We found all the staff to be friendly and helpful.

I liked the secure parking - at 8 euros it seemed a good price for a city centre.

When next we stop off in Chartres we are very likely to use this hotel again.

If, unlike Mrs Cheapbutdemanding and me, you’re fabulously wealthy and unconcerned with such things as prudent budgeting when planning your holiday, you’ll be able to afford something a little more upmarket than the Ibis when you visit Chartres. It’s difficult to pretend that it is anything more or less than a bog-standard Euro-Box, which ordinarily I would find heart-crushingly soul destroying. Having said that, the place is clean and tidy and the receptionists we met were friendly and helpful. Our room was bland and a little on the small side but we were only in Chartres for one night – a longer stay in such confined surroundings might have become a little claustrophobic, and possibly reminiscent of an American Super-Max prison facility after a few days. The lock-up theme continues in that the bed was a slab of super-dense foam, which suited Mrs C and I with our need for an ultra-firm lack of comfort, but might not be agreeable to everybody. I would really have liked a kettle in the room as well, but I’ve since found that this isn’t as common on the Continent as it is back in Blighty, where we are simply incapable of functioning without ready access to tea-making facilities. There is a bar which is available 24 hours a day if you are thirsty and flush with funds. The restaurant menu is, as might be expected, ambitiously priced and wildly unexciting. When breakfast was mentioned at check-in we baulked at the idea of paying nine Euros each for what is essentially a cup of coffee and a croissant (maybe a yoghurt or some fruit as well if either of us might be feeling particularly virtuous), so we are unable to report on the quality of the fare.

This all sounds quite grim, doesn’t it? But it isn’t really: You are, after all, in one of the great cathedral cities of France, and the Ibis does have a number of points in its favour as far as budget hotels are concerned.

Firstly, it is dead easy to find, even with the out-of-date satellite navigation system that my innate meanness refuses to allow me to upgrade. The hotel sits on the main route through town, and even without the facility to search for the hotel’s address on my prat-nav, we found it simply by driving through town and exclaiming, in unison, “Oh, there it is!” Should you choose to arrive in Chartres by train you will find yourself only a five minute (maybe ten with luggage) walk from the Ibis.

Secondly, if you are driving, there is a secure car park under the hotel. The charge when we visited was eight Euros for 24 hours, which I consider quite reasonable for town centre parking, especially as it meant we didn’t need to unload the whole car for our overnight stay. If you have luggage you may choose to use the vehicle ramp to leave the car park as the stairs are a real pig if you have anything larger than a small holdall by way of possessions with you.

The main attraction of the Ibis for tourists though (If you in Chartres on business and your employer makes you stay here, you might like to start thinking about emailing your CV to your employer’s competitors) is the proximity to the Cathedral and the old town. You simply walk out of the hotel, turn left at the Irish pub (yes, really...) and walk up the hill for three or four minutes until you are presented with the majesty of the Cathedral and the hospitality of the various tabacs, bistros and brasseries that Chartres has in abundance. And this, on the balance of probabilities, is why you came to Chartres in the first place.

So, as they say, you pays your money and you makes your choice – There are several very good hotels in Chartres, but if money is a consideration and you are happy with clean and basic, then the Ibis is a satisfactory option.

Good value, my favourite Ibis hotel in France. Nice large bar area and Pizza, Pasta restaraunt. Very secure parking avaiable behind controlled gates. Super friendly English speaking staff. Town is very elegant with history, shopping and good restaraunts .
