“Good accomodation, small rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

Hitting the road for an airshow once again, I found myself booking three nights in this hotel. A triple and a twin. Located just by the exit of the motorway, this hotel is a great location for people spending a night as part of some longer overland trip. But you will need your car to get to the historical centre of Bourges (but relax, free parking is provided close to the Cathedral, so nothing to really worry about). The Cathedral is definitely a MUST, and you need to visit it and the surrounding old town.

Staff are curteous, and the general standard of accomodation is good. The wifi is good, and you get a handful of free channels (all in French) on the TV. The parking is secure and within the hotel's fencing, so pretty safe. You can probably park within view of your room.

And now for the nasty bits. A triple room gets you a bunk bed for the third person, and the rooms are very small. Small as in making it a major co-ordinated effort for three people to move across the room, open the door, get into the bathroom, etc.

One last word of warning, if you're taking a triple room, the top of the bunk goes to an agile and fit person, preferably not very tall, as you only have about 2-3 feet of headroom once in your bunk.

Other than that, all was to our satisfaction.

Small tip - there is a discount supermarket called Netto about 5 minutes' away, and across the road there are some good eateries, including a Courtepaille Grille.

Room Tip: Taking a room at the back of the hotel gives you a nice sunset view.

When we speed through France on the way to or from the exotic south is it wrong that we stick to autoroutes and minimise our costs at this new breed of cheap and cheerless 'auto'hotels? The French seem to lead the world in automated, cost effective and efficient stop offs. We eat, shower and sleep to an acceptable level whilst deferring the start of our true holiday time. And yet.....the staff are always so friendly and helpful at these stops, bringing a welcome humanity to the experience. Still, on a windswept night as we ascend the external metal stairway and gaze over the knobbled concrete paving to the distant service stations and toll booths we perhaps catch some deja-vu of the sixties nouvelle vague and the spirit of Jean-Luc Goddard. Perhaps we are really travelling in harmony with our times here.
