Bourges is situated mid-way through France when travelling from North to South, an ideal one-night stopover for those driving to the Mediterranean.
Hotel Le Cygne is easily found, on the main round-about in front of the railway station - and herein lies the only problem with this hotel. During our one night stay in August the weather was hot and humid, we tried to sleep with the windows open, but due to the noise of traffic outside the hotel, cars, motorcycles and buses coming and going from the rail station, sleep was not possible. With the windows closed the heat was unbearable. The traffic noise went on until the early hours (2am).
Despite the above, this hotel is a really good find. 72 Euros for two adults and one 8 year old, sharing a room that sleeps 3 with a double bed and a single bed. Breakfast included. A buffet-style set-up which included bread, pastries, cereals, fruit, juices and tea/coffee. Staff were friendly and helped us with our limited French. Everything was clean and tidy, and the beds were comfortable.
A short 15 minute walk to Rue Bourbonnoux (close to the Cathedral) where there is a good selection of restaurants. There is a park on the way which had live entertainment on in the evening (music stage) with seating.
