My wife and I stayed two nights at this establishment and can honestly say that you get what you pay for. First of all, the price is very reasonable. The staff is reasonably friendly too. The hotel's location is good and excellent as a jumping off point to visit the chateaus in the Loire Valley. That's about all I can say that's good about this place. And now the rooms...hmmmmm...what can I say? If you remember the old black and white Batman series, the rooms kind of reminded me of the Joker's headquarters, that were always filmed from a sideways angle. We had the misfortune of being assigned to the Pigeoneer room on the top floor. After lugging our bags up the three flights of stairs, I had to duck to enter the short doorway to the Joker's headquarters. It soon became apparent that the owners of the hotel tried to squeeze in one more room where there wasn't sufficient space. I could only stand to my full height in about 30% of the room, since the ceiling swooped from about 8 feet on one side of the room down to about two feet on the other side. Let's put it this way; I couldn't stand to use the toilet...the ceiling was too low. Also, the bathroom wasn't really a separate room; it was essentially part of the main room so there is no privacy. Another interesting note about this room, the "carpet" seems to be some kind of foot torture therapy because it was really uncomfortable on bare feet.
In the morning, the manager was very nice and changed our room at our request. We're not certain which room was worse, the first or the second. The second room was actually smaller than the first, again on the top floor. The main issue was the heat; there was no air con and there was no air circulation in the room which faced a wall in the hotel courtyard. The window was very small. I couldn't sleep all night and had to get up periodically to stick my head out the window to get some air...but hey, at least I could stand up to use the toilet and the bathroom had a door.
I'm not sure how the hotel has garnered a #1 rating...perhaps it's the price and location. The rooms are cheap and clean and the hotel if well located. If that's all you're looking for, just be prepared for the possibility of some discomfort if you're on the top floor.
Try to avoid the small rooms on the top floor if you can!!
