“refreshing "little" chateau”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

after you tour the Chateau's of Kings, you should go look at the more "real" places. We enjoyed this as much as the big ones because it was a real home, wit real furnishings, and the people of the past came alive within the house.

A short drive and easy access, just follow signs in the town but WATCH OUT FOR SPEED CAMERA, THEY ARE EVERYWHERE

“A Jewel but lots of steps to walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

It's definitely worth visiting this lovely chateau but just know that you will be climbing lots and lots of steps through this enchanting place. You can get an audio at an extra charge to take you through each area, even the gardens. Many of the rooms were furnished. It looked to me like there was a lot of recent renovations and looked new. There is a little place where you can get a bite to eat or drink. All in all, great place to visit. Definitely worth it.

“Just OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

We went at night to see the illumination show they have during summer. There were some great lighting effects but most of it was average at best.
Should have just gone during the day so we could see the grounds and the rest of the Chateau

“Greed is Good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

Without the greed of the French monarchy towards Italy we should not now be enjoying some of the finest Italian Renaissance architecture outside its homeland. Thank you Louis and Francois for invading and bringing Leonardo da Vinci back with you. Azay is one of the four Renaissance jewels in the Loire - see Chenonceau, Chambord, Blois and Azay and you have a complete set of differing size and purposes. Gilles Berthelot's greed rebuilt Azay into its present form and cost him the castle The French Revolution's greed allowed Charles de Biencourt to buy it and leave us a view of 19th century life at the castle. Finally the French state took it on and has spent more than 100 years putting it back together, but still not finished. Where other than in these buildings can you see and experience over 500 years of history? See them all; they are well worth the visit.

“Charming, small and interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

A beautiful chateau, with lovely surrounding water and English-style gardens -- very calm and dreamy. Interior is interesting and more manageable than some. Its not large and the rooms are such that you can imagine living there. Useful English informatioon in each. Some good paintings. One of the better souvenir shops. Nice little cafe to sit and take tea. Very different to say the magnificence of Chambord, but a very pleasant experience. Village outside is lovely too. In our top 5 visits.
