Owner description: With the dawning of the Renaissance, the mighty medieval fortress of Amboise gave way to a royal residence, during the reigns of the Kings of France Charles VIII and François I. The Court, a large number of men and women of letters and European artists, stayed here on invitation from the sovereigns, one example being Leonardo da Vinci who lies here in peace in the Château’s Chapel. This place of high renown in the History of France boasts an exceptional collection of Gothic and Renaissance furniture illustrating the artistic finery of the first French Renaissance. After a visit of the Royal House and the impressive Cavalry Towers, the walk continues in the magnificent panoramic gardens overlooking the Loire river.

“Lovely Chateau and very picturesque town.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2014 NEW

Beautiful chateau and lovely grounds as well as the open view of the Loire river. It was a birth and death place of King Charles VIII who had died in his twenties due to an unfortunate accident (he hit his head on a low door and died a few hours later). He was the one who brought Italian artists with him back in 1495 and it was the time when the Chateau was so lavishly decorated.

King Francis I invited Leonardo da Vinci to France in 1516 and gave him a gift: the Chateau of Clos-Luce not far from Chateau d'Amboise. Beautiful Saint Hubert Chapel on the premises of Chateau d'Amboise is the final resting place of Leonardo: this is exactly what makes the Chateau so special.

It was also a favorite castle of
Catherine de Medici who also favored neighboring Chateau Chaumont which is certainly worth a visit as well.

In my opinion, Chateau d'Amboise is a must visit for those who love history and want to pay tribute to the greatest of the great: Leonardo da Vinci.

The town of Amboise is very pretty and is worth a short walk. They have ample parking that makes a visit to the Chateau easier.

“Beautiful chateau”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2014

This was our introduction to chateaux in the Loire Valley and it did not disappoint. It was a beautiful chateau and gardens. The views from the ramparts were gorgeous. We didn't know of the connection between Leonardo Da Vinci and Amboise until visiting the chateau. It was definitely worth the visit. Highly recommend!
