“Don't go there if you want any service!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

The tone was set when we arrived. No sign to indicate the location of reception. The guy who took us to our room set off at a pace and didn't check we were behind him - my wife walks only slowly. When we caught up and reached the room he opened the door, gestured its entrance and left quickly and without any sort of welcome or guidance about its facilities etc. The room was bizarre; opulent with statues, a black reflective ceiling, large statue of a cherub in the bathroom with foliage emerging from everywhere and everything on a triangular theme! The 'marble' appearance of the surfaces was formica. However, absolutely no information about the hotel, its amenities, restaurant, times of meals, local guides and the usual sort of factual information about emergency exits, local attractions and so on. In short - nothing. There were no shelves, drawers and the wardrobe was a very small triangular hole in the wall. The seating was odd, with just two perspex (or similar) chairs, extraordinarily uncomfortable. There was no other means of ventilation other than opening the french doors to the lawn - no windows - and only one extra pillow. To get a hairdryer you had to go back to reception and then pay a deposit! Extraordinary for a 3+ star hotel. OK, the views over Vezelay were wonderful, but that is all the positive comment I can make about the room.

Obviously didn't eat in the restaurant, and on our return to the hotel found that there was no lighting on the path, with steps, to our room. It was raining, the path and steps potentially slippery so that with a walking impediment it was a risky walk to the room. WiFi in the public areas was a joke since those areas are simply a small area near the restaurant. We opted out of breakfast since they were asking €12 for that. The final settlement of the bill was carried out in a very surly manner by the lady of the house, who had no interest in the comfort of the room, how we had found her hotel, nor any form of friendly interaction.

The hotel promised a lot in the way of its location and description of the room, but delivered minimally. Thank goodness we were there for one night only.

We only had the one night at Crispol and were mostly impressed. We found the rooms to be lavishly decorated - perhaps a little over the top but better than being drab. The shiny black ceiling alone was remarkable but the various statues in the room added to the atmosphere.

The facilities were excellent, views lovely and bath impressive - although we found it impossible to remove the plug from the sink which caused us a few minor difficulties.

The only drawback for us was the complete inability of the owners to speak ANY english. My schoolboy french helped a little, but we had booked in at dinner (which was a fantastic setting with the views of sunset over Vezelay) and the menu was in French and the owners could not translate ANYTHING on it. They didnt even know the words 'salt' or 'pepper'. I found that quite astounding for people who had clearly been around the hotel/restaurant scene for some time. It smacked a little of arrogance although they did try to meet any needs we had - once I was able to communicate what we wanted.

The hotel is quite distant from the nearby town and I would probably choose something there if I was staying in the area again - unless I manage to master the French language in the meantime.

Room Tip: Learn French or take a very good phrasebook with you. Check the plug in the sink can be removed.

I was just revisiting many of the hotels and trips we have taken over the past 25 years and returned to this Trip Advisor' page on the Crispol where we stayed in 2004 - and I feel I must place a review and comment here.

We arrived and were given an average but adequate room with a very nice distant view of the Cathedral in Vezelay. So far no problem, We made reservations for dinner at their restaurant and were enjoying a very pleasant dinner and were impressed with the food,

In the lightness of the moment, I commented to the owner that her food was very good as good as some of the finest restaurants we had eaten at in France. I guess I must have made some massive faux pas because her attitude immediately switched and she started to mumble and jesture about what I had said. She kept it up for some time. All so very strange to have gone from joviality to such sourness in the flash of an eye.

There was also a discrepency in the restaurant bill which when we pointed it out was handled with complete contempt.

The next morning, as we checked out, she icily stood by the front desk and when we went to pay the bill she demanded cash - she didn't want to accept a credit card.

We thought the incident strange but nothing more until I read some of the posts here and thought that our experience fit with what others had observed. (note that I had to place an incorrect date since I could not enter 2004 as an option).

The hotel is a 5 minute drive from Vézelay and has distant views over the Basilique.
The room was comfortable enough and of very good size. Not everyone will like the interior design though, we thought the (numerous) golden statues to be of dubious, "bling" taste.

The owners are unfortunately not the warmest persons we have met, and were quite suspicious that we would book without turning up and for other minor things which made the experience a little unpleasant, like adopting a bossy tone towards us.

I am sure there are plenty of places around with more character and friendly owners.

Stayed one night here while passing through Burgundy, and were delighted to find such a comfortable friendly hotel with stunning views of the hill and basilica from the rear windows, both in the bedroom and the very pleasant dining room. The bedroom had lively and interesting modern artwork and ultra trendy fittings, the bathroom being particularly unusual and well designed. We had an excellent dinner and watched the panorama of the sunset over the hill - the colour changes were spectacular.

Would certainly stay here again and recommend it to anyone with confidence. It probably helps to speak French as we did but we couldn't fault the warmth of the reception and service from the lovely couple who run the hotel - not in the first flush of youth but clearly working hard to maintain the ambiance of this charming spot.

... a wonderful hotel across the valley from the nearby hilltop town of Vezelay. The views of Vezelay are spectacular, especially in the early morning where the fog fills the valley below, and at sunset, where the sun sets behind the Basilique Sainte Madeleine. Have stayed here every year at least once a year since 1999. Cannot recommend either the hotel or the restaurant highly enough. The management is friendly and accomodating. Not sure where the previous commenter stayed, but it could not have been the Crispol.

We booked this hotel thru France Balloons. The location was lovely but not close enough to the very beautiful town of Vezelay. The staff was friendly but didn't speak any English. The restaurant was very good with a nice view but the rooms seriously needed updating. The area is great for local touring but I would recommend staying in Vezelay.
