The tone was set when we arrived. No sign to indicate the location of reception. The guy who took us to our room set off at a pace and didn't check we were behind him - my wife walks only slowly. When we caught up and reached the room he opened the door, gestured its entrance and left quickly and without any sort of welcome or guidance about its facilities etc. The room was bizarre; opulent with statues, a black reflective ceiling, large statue of a cherub in the bathroom with foliage emerging from everywhere and everything on a triangular theme! The 'marble' appearance of the surfaces was formica. However, absolutely no information about the hotel, its amenities, restaurant, times of meals, local guides and the usual sort of factual information about emergency exits, local attractions and so on. In short - nothing. There were no shelves, drawers and the wardrobe was a very small triangular hole in the wall. The seating was odd, with just two perspex (or similar) chairs, extraordinarily uncomfortable. There was no other means of ventilation other than opening the french doors to the lawn - no windows - and only one extra pillow. To get a hairdryer you had to go back to reception and then pay a deposit! Extraordinary for a 3+ star hotel. OK, the views over Vezelay were wonderful, but that is all the positive comment I can make about the room.
Obviously didn't eat in the restaurant, and on our return to the hotel found that there was no lighting on the path, with steps, to our room. It was raining, the path and steps potentially slippery so that with a walking impediment it was a risky walk to the room. WiFi in the public areas was a joke since those areas are simply a small area near the restaurant. We opted out of breakfast since they were asking €12 for that. The final settlement of the bill was carried out in a very surly manner by the lady of the house, who had no interest in the comfort of the room, how we had found her hotel, nor any form of friendly interaction.
The hotel promised a lot in the way of its location and description of the room, but delivered minimally. Thank goodness we were there for one night only.
