My family (including two boys ages 13 and 10) and I just returned from a five night stay at La Terre D'Or, and we had such a wonderful time that I haven't stopped thinking about it. We were there the second week of July. Nestled on a hillside above Beaune, in the heart of the Burgundy region, La Terre D'Or is a renovated country farm house and grounds, owned and run by Jean-Louis and his son Vincent. There is a main house and a second smaller house on the property. The main house has been completely redone in a beautiful, somewhat contemporary fashion, and the smaller house has more of a French country appeal. Both offer spacious accomodations with very comfortable furniture and bedding, great bathrooms (with large showers, excellent water pressure, and washcloths!) great bedding and towels, large robes and air conditioning. A shady patio outside the main house offers amazing views of Beaune and and the valley below, with vineyards as far as the eye can see. A breakfast of croissants, fruit, jellys, meats, juice and coffee is served here in the morning if you desire.
The grounds of La Terre D'Or are absolutely beautiful...a riot of flowers, shade trees and fruit trees, with butterflys fluttering throughout. Whimsical touches abound. Vincent's wife is an artist, and her sculptures of children and fairies are scattered about in a charming way. A swimming pool offers wonderful refreshment after hiking or walking through Beaune.
Probably the most amazing feature is a large cave that is on the property underneath the house and yard. This was excavated by Jean-Louis and Vincent and has been fitted with halogen lighting and paved areas on which to walk. There is a hot tub and small waterfall! This area functions as a wine cellar and reception area....we were attending a wedding, and part of the reception was held in the cave.
Without a doubt, however, the best feature of La Terre D'Or is Jean-Louis and his son Vincent. They both speak English quite well, and are lovely people...warm, friendly and welcoming. They assist with reservations, transportation to Beaune and other villages, activities, tours...or they will glady just sit and chat with you while you enjoy a bottle of pinot noir. Jean-Louis has lived here for years, and knows everybody. His knowledge of the region and wine making is encyclopedic, and I loved listening to him explain the history of Burgundy.
There's no doubt that this is a special place. Not inexpensive, to be sure, but I felt it was fully worth the cost, and we hope to return in the future.
