My wife and I loved this restaurant had one of the better and most interesting meals we had in Beaune here – and that is saying a lot. We dined here in late May, 2013, at the recommendation of our hotel. It is a small place just a block or so outside of the old Beaune city walls. There are just a handful of tables and the interior, while ok, it is not particularly interesting or inspiring. However, the food was very good as was the service.
First, a caution. The owner/server, Richard (I assume he’s one of the owners), doesn’t speak much English. More, the menu is in French AND its creative, meaning many of the “food” words tourists look for to help them get through a menu aren’t there or obvious. For example, a dish, in English Might read something like “Farmer Brown’s organic, local Sow’s cheek…” and if you only knew the French word for “pork” you’d never see it.
It can be confusing for non-French or barely-French speakers. Indeed, we saw a couple sit, puzzle over the menu for ten minutes and get up and leave. DON’T leave. Take a chance. The food was worth it. By the way, I think that is why one of the reviews below was so indignant (though I bet there was a mistranslation involved) about the restaurant not wanting reservations from Americans. Richard (and our Hotel) explained that they’ve had many people walk out and because they don’t understand the menu. I don’t blame anyone who may be scared by a complicated menu (that’s the restaurant’s problem, especially in a town that has a lot of touist), however it might explain why the management doesn’t want hotel reservations for people who might leave out of frustration. As advice to the restaurant, they should try to get an English version of their menu – but I suspect that it changes enough that it would be hard to keep up.
In any event, our meal was excellent and memorable and Richard was very kind and most helpful – it is his wife, I think, who is the chef. There are not many choices – three mains, maybe, if I remember correctly. My wife had a wonderful smoked salmon starter, a great Fish (we’d never heard of) in a wonderful green sauce and some wonderful ice cream. I had their ham persille as a starter and pork ribs for a main and another of their wonderful deserts. There were also great, fresh salads. We also had a cheese course that included some previously unknown (to us) local cheeses that we’re now crazy about. We asked Richard to match wines by the glass to our order and he did a great job.
He really was the only server, so when the place is hopping, he’s working like a madman.
The prices seemed fair for what we got and were in line with other quality meals we had in Beaune.
All in all, it was a lovely evening with delicious food – even if the menu took us out of our comfort zone for a time. Give it a try, I think you will be pleased you did.
