At the end of a 2 week whirlwind business trip my wife and I reserved a room at the Chateau de Challenges, 3 km outside of Beaune. If there is a better, more tranquil, more romantic site in the heart of Burgundy I would love to know about it!. The Chateau is on 7 acres in a residential neighborhood. The grounds are lovely and our room ( a suite in the main building) was fabulous. It's small enough to be "quaint" but not so much so that you feel obligated to get to know the other guests unless you choose to do so. The proprietors, M & Mme Weber, were incredible! Their hospitality and advice made us feel at home. We ate at 3 of the restaurants that M. Weber recommended and each one was great. We walked or bicycled into Beaune and the surrounding area each day (the Chateau has bikes available) and the one day we got caught in a serious thunderstorm M. Weber came and retrieved us. If you are looking for a base from which to explore the Burgundy region I can truely say that the Chateau de Challenges should absolutely be on the top of your list. Although listed as a 3-star (there is no lunch or dinner service) it certainly gets 5-stars from us!

  • Liked — It was quiet, serene and peaceful
  • Disliked — There are no screens on the windows so we had some flys in the room. Nothing terrible.

Small Chateau in a hamlet 8 minutes drive to the pretty walled town of Beaune. Spacious room in the annex, modern, clean, bright, looking out to the swimming pool at 130€ + 12 € pp breakfast. Suites in the main building on 1st floor, older but equally nice and more expensive at 155 €. Other rooms on 2nd floor walk-up in main building 92 €. Heat and a/c totally under your control, no safe, parking, no wi-fi but you can plug your laptop into a DSL high-speed connection in the breakfast room for free. Tub and shower in room 303, mini-bar, CNN, BBC and desk with two chairs. Towels a bit small and of course no washcloths but Kleenex. Excellent hotel overall and you don’t have to have the 12 € breakfast.

My wife and I stayed here for 2 days with some friends of ours visiting from the states. The hotel is in a peaceful alcove about 10 minutes drive from the main city of Beaune. We found the owners to be very kind and helpful and the grounds were so beautiful. Breakfast in the mornings was served outside in the front garden which was really special. This is a place you will definitely want to have a care for but then again it goes without saying the you would need a car in Burgundy in order to fully appreciate the numerous vineyards and great local restaurants. The only drawback: with the serene natural surroundings come flies. We had to spend a few minutes when we checked in getting a small colony out of our room and summarily executing the stragglers but after that we had no complaints. I'd definitely go back.....

Nice place, nice host. They gave a good advice for dinner. The mussels St. Jaques there were excellent.

This is a peaceful, comfortable retreat about 3 km (10 Euro taxi ride) outside of Beaune. After arrival, we discovered we were sharing our room with a contingent of flies. The owner/host immediately moved us to a quiet, fly-less, corner room, with a pristine tiled bath and a view of the lush chateau grounds. Some aspects of the chateau have a motel feel to them--flimsy doors, a dimly-lit hallway--but our room was comfortably furnished and on request, you can have coffee or a drink brought to you in the elegant sitting room downstairs. Our host also provided us with a stack of pamphlets and maps detailing local wineries and tourism opportunities. (The tasting at Bouchard, Aine & Fils is not to be missed!) Word of caution: breakfast --while delicious and more than ample--is an extra 12 Euros per person.
