“Charming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

We stopped over at this hotel for one night only on a travel around France. Charming oldie worldie feel to it on the outside and in. The Manager was most helpful in recommending places to see and where to eat in Auxerre. After spending the day sight seeing we returned quite early to the Hotel and ordered a nice chilled bottle of Chablis to enjoy in the garden surrounded by mature trees cast iron tables and soft garden sofa's. A swimming pool is there if you want to cool down after a long day taken in the wonderful Views of Auxerre. This Hotel and Place would be ideal for people that are not too attracted or able to enjoy long walks as the center can be easily taken in due to the fact it is not a huge town and you can rest on the many terraces provided for a snack a drink or a three course meal. In all the hotel is a must see for the interior alone with the bonus of the informative manager who is kind polite and most helpful. we would go again for a week next time we travel to France.

We have stayed in this hotel 4 times now and have found it a convenient and very pleasant stop-over when travelling across France. The building and wooded grounds are lovely (the air of slightly faded elegance adds to the charm) and the swimming pool is very welcome when arriving after a hot journey. However Auxerre deserves more than just a fleeting visit - it is an interesting and picturesque town with a superb cathedral, and its location makes it an ideal centre for exploring the region as the great wine-producing areas of champagne and chablis are close by, and the countryside is beautiful. The rooms are on the small side and rather over-furnished, but in keeping with the overall 19th century style. The bathrooms would be better without the baths but with a really good shower cubicle as I always find impossible not to soak the room with a hand-held shower and it would maximise the limited space. Lacking too was a large shelf for toiletries by or under the basin. We found the bed over-firm and consequently didn't sleep terribly well (maybe a mattress-topper?) and the pillows hard, but we always travel with our own as we find most hotels do not provide comfortable pillows. The owner is English and charming, and she and her staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It is a pity that there isn't a full restaurant or at least a bistro, but the room service menu was available on the terrace in the evening and was perfectly acceptable, and breakfast was good and plentiful. Overall - the kind of experience that we look forward to repeating and we would absolutely recommend this hotel.

Very central and convenient. The room although small was well equipped, clean and comfortable. The service was excellent and the staff were fluent in English and very helpful. I have stayed at this hotel before and would not hesitate to return. Lunch in the well maintained gardens is a bonus as is room service at no extra cost. The breakfast is substantial and served in the quaint dining room for a good length of time, no hurry.

I arrived with my son late in the afternoon. The reception was quite friendly but the room was little and lacking of light. The garden is beautiful and well-keeped: we had there a very pleasant breakfast. Probably in winter the hotel grounds are less attractive.

To be sure, given the limited choice of hotels in Auxerre, this is still the best hotel in town. However, do not expect the luxury which is usually connected with 4 stars - 3 stars would be more appropriate to this hotel. You may call this hotel romantic - it is a historic mansion with the look and feel of a small chateau. On the other hand, it is pretty much run-down. The walls are crumbling (look at my photos), stones are falling from the roof, and the greater part of the park is neglected. Here, my review in detail:
Location: The hotel is located at the edge of historical downtown of Auxerre. It is a short walk to the main attractions. The location is rather quiet and it is not really necessary to book the more expensive rooms to the park side.
Building: As said, the building is like a small chateau, however with crumbling stonework. The public areas have a lot of atmosphere and the hotel has a cozy bar. In summer, you will enjoy the terrace overlooking the park. The park is not large, more like a large garden, and in shameful neglect. There are remnants of a fountain, a pond and an artificial stream, but everything is run-down and dirty. Sadly, many details of the building are neglected or outright ugly (like the poster at the front entrance).
Rooms: We had a so-called "large room with park view" and it was really small. On the floor plan, I saw that the standard rooms are even smaller and it is hardly imaginable to stay in such a tiny chamber. The "double bed" was a queen-size with just one blanket - we did not sleep really well. Although we had a corner room with two windows, the room was very dark, partly because of the darkish décor. The bathroom was modern, but also small. There was just a bathtub with a hand shower which we found very inconvenient. The room has a/c. The best thing was that we had a corner room with a large private balcony.
Pool: The hotel has a small heated outdoor pool which is covered with a plexiglass dome. It opens at 9 a.m.
Food and drink: Breakfast is a mixture of French continental and German (with cold cuts). Quality of ingredients is rather poor. The hotel has no real restaurant but a short menu with a few dishes which are probably prefabricated. Hence, we had a faboulus dinner at Le Jardin Gourmand which is a short walk from the hotel. The bar offers a good selection of kirs, wines and other drinks.
Service: The service was somewhat patchy. Often, there was no one in the bar or on the terrace to ask us for drinks, and several times, there were no more towels at the pool.
Conclusion: You might get a typical French, romantic hotel experience in a historic mansion. However, you might be disappointed if your expectations are guided by the "4 stars" advertising and by the price level of the hotel. Sadly, the house is falling into pieces if nobody is willing to invest into its maintenance and renovation.

Room Tip: The standard rooms are extremely small, even the "large" rooms are small. The premium for...

The park is actually a very large wooded garden at the rear of this pleasant hotel, which also has a covered swimming pool. Smallish rooms, reasonable breakfast, bar and helpful ' owner' who can advise on the limited choice of restaurants available in town. Five minutes walk from centre, good soundproofing of rooms overlooking road, slightly more expensive for garden view. Beware however that rooms have no drawers for clothes to be put away. Good w-fi and a/c.

Pleasant hotel with lovely grounds within easy walk to center of Auxerre. Room was small but elegant. Comfortable lounge. Staff speaks excellent English. No children staying here during our 3 night stay, but comments in the guest book suggest they love the swimming pool.
