“A typical French traditional hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

We stayed in September for 3 nights and our experience was so much better that other reviews. The lady on the desk was a bit cool when we arrived but perked up later! Other staff were happier but they all helped with reccos for restaurants etc. we were shown to a large newly renovated room overlooking the large garden at the back. Good well equipped bathroom with toiletries etc. Shower hand held but that's France! Breakfast was excellent with fresh bread, croissants and a buffet spread including some local bits. Secure free parking was a bonus. Situated outside St. Malo at Saint Servan which is a nice area but the Old Town is a 30 minute walk. Taxi is about 9 euros.

We stayed two nights at this lovely hotel. We had an amazing room looking out onto the gardens. It is a beautiful old house and they have retained all its charm.

The gardens were in need of a bit of help but in a way that added to the hotel's elegance.

Everyone was very helpful with information regarding the area and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The breakfast was delicious and we would highly recommend this hotel.

An amazing old house with a fascinating history, huge rooms and excellent free(!) secure parking, at the end of a lovely garden. We stayed one night enroute for the Portsmouth ferry, and could have spent much more time enjoying the hotel and the surrounding Saint Servan district, which we think is quite the nicest part of St Malo. We did not find pre-specifying our breakfast on arrival a problem (some reviewers seem to have), and were rewarded with an excellent French Breakfast, served overlooking the garden. It is not the cheapest hotel in the district, but it is full of character and comfortable, and we shall return.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel because we couldn't remember the name of the lovely place we stayed at 7 years ago. I was shown the room and was quoted 145 Euros not including breakfast, the lady must have seen my shock and said she'd do a deal - 135 Euros all in. We accepted and were directed through the secure gates to a beautiful garden with shaded parking under a canopy of mature trees.
The room was tastefully decorated, both the bedroom and bathroom windows overlooked the garden, which was really peaceful. The shower was over the bath and there wasn't a curtain or a wall mounting, you have to hold the shower-head in order to use it.
I had to repair the toilet flush mechanism, which had become completely detached.
We were given a photocopy of a map and 2 restaurants were recommended, nice touch we thought. We walked towards the old town and got lost, so much for the map! However, we did find the hotel we stayed at previously - Manoir du Cunningham, Rue des Bas Sablons. We ate at one of the restaurants that had been recommended - La Cale, which was quite nice. There were other Le Valmarin guests eating there too, we thought that Le Val management could have been on commission!
Breakfast was pleasant enough, we'd had to place our order for coffee and juice whilst being led up the staircase carrying our bags - odd we thought!

The problem came when checking out and is the reason for the 2 star award, we were stung for over 160 Euros! It was a different woman on the desk, she charged us for breakfast. We couldn't argue as they'd taken my credit card number as security.
We won't be returning to this hotel, we'll try to get in at the Manoir du Cunningham, Rue des Bas Sablons!

We arrived at the hotel with another couple who had booked from Australia. We loved the quiet elegance of the hotel with its rich history and the beautiful garden setting. We loved the location and appreciated the free off street parking which is fairly rare in our experience in France. Due to a mechanical failure with our new car, we were forced to spend an additional two nights in St. Malo and we chose to remain at the Valmarin. The staff were extremely helpful and went out of their way to assist us. We could not have managed the negotiations around the repairs to our car without their assistance. We thought the breakfast served in a beautiful dining room was delightful and very French. We loved everything about the hotel and will definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: There is no lift in the hotel and carrying bags up multiple stairs can present problems for some. Th...

We had two rooms for a night waiting for Condor to Guernsey, could not fault the place , excellent service and clean , parking off road and secure, good breakfast all home made 1st class. They are also dog friendly.
If possible have a room at the rear overlooking the Garden super.

We stayed here for the novelty value of staying in an authentic 18th Century house, and we weren't disappointed. The room was really spacious, and the modernisation vis a vis the bathroom facilities were excellent.

The lady of the house couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast was homemade and in lovely comfortable surroundings.

The gardens are lovely and there is also some limited parking.

It is 2 minutes from the harbour front, and very quiet and private. Worth a visit for sure.
