“Basil Fawlty is alive and well.....”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2008

The hotel as already stated is in a very unsavory part of town, miles away from anywhere. We arrived late afternoon, and would have liked a drink, no chance. We rang the bell on the bar and were ignored by Basil who was just in the next room. So we decided to go out for a walk, big mistake, it was just a ghost town, very spooky. Just as spooky was the decor as previously mentioned.

Breakfast was sparse and at about 9 euros was a rip off.

On the plus side the room was cheap and clean, so I guess you pays your money etc.......

Please DON'T book this hotel - I cannot emphasise that enough! It is miles away from Rennes, in a horrible area with hideous decor. But more than this, we never got to actually SEE our room because despite having booked and paid online we arrived to be told (in French, by the rudest man I have ever come across) that the hotel was full. Thank god I had a friend with me who speaks fluent French, who asked him why there was no space for us despite our booking. He shrugged and basically acted as if it was perfectly normal to turn up and be told you cannot have a room despite having booked. He gave us a map to another hotel (Hotel Libertie - please try not to stay there either) and asked if we had a car. We didn't and he shrugged. We ended up walking for miles and actually LEFT RENNES. The place was shoddy motel by the motorway, which recalled Hitchcock's Psycho. Needless to say, we both spent a sleepless night and were relieved to leave the next day. Once again, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS HOTEL.

Stayed here on our way back to St Malo - would NOT stay again!

It's located just off junction 9 of the Rennes ring-road, and is very easy to find, but it's a long way from the city centre, in a rather seedy residential area. I certainly wouldn't feel happy walking around at night time!

We had booked a studio for 4 (being a family of 4 with 2 young children), but were told on check-in that it wasn't available, so were given 2 double rooms next door to each other on the third floor. The lift is tiny - only big enough for 2 people, so we "sprinted" up the 3 flights of stairs (awful mustard brown patterned carpet left over from the 70's), past some very bizarre objects - as previously mentioned in another review - a mannequin clothed in an evening dress, a shoe-shine stand, some strange "instruments" - all very odd and quirky.

The rooms were basic to say the least, but at least the bed-linen and towels were clean! No duvets, though. The shower rooms in both rooms were tiny, a bit smelly and could do with a re-fit, but there was sufficient hot water, and the showers worked well enough.

The walls of the rooms were filthy! They appeared to be clad in off-white grooved plastic ( sort of tongue-and-groove effect) and on further inspection, they were very dirty; the grooves were lined with dirt and there was the odd stain mark elsewhere.

We didn't stay for breakfast, so can't comment on that.

On the plus side, the staff were very courteous, and the rooms were very reasonably priced - you get what you pay for! HOWEVER, next time we will be staying elsewhere!

Recommendation: If you are dining out in Rennes, head for the Place des Lices where there are some super restaurants in the surrounding medieval streets. We ate at "Au Bureau" in the Place St Michel. Fast and friendly service, reasonable prices and delicious food!

The hotel was cheep and clean. Decor was a good talking point - manequins & antiques meets the 70's??? There was one major drawback - the distance from the town center. You have to take a bus - takes at least 10 mins. The area is not pleasant - quite a few unsavouries about. Felt a bit on edge...get a taxi late at night.

Hotel itself isn't bad, but do not try to walk to it from the train station. Hotel's website says it is .6 km, but it is definitely much farther. Especially avoid the walk at twilight/ night. A bit sketchy. Nice rooms though. Very cheap and comfortable. Experience would have been above average if we had taken the bus (our mistake!).
