“Good but a charitable Michelin Star”

Having travelled from the basque region in Spain to Northern France (in a campervan) we decided to treat ourselves to a nice night where we could lie in a nice bed and have a nice meal! So we booked into Lecoq Gadby for a night.

Hotel was nice but for me didn't go that extra bit to justify the price, (fairly basic).
We typed restaurants etc into google for Rennes and the above was selected. We asked at reception about the restaurant and were told there would be no problem etc so we decided to stay. About 2 hours into our stay a call to our room informed us that the restaurant was fully booked for a function and the reception could advise us on other places to dine etc. Annoyed by this ( and I have to say slightly paranoid), my wife explained that the restaurant was the reason why we booked the hotel in the first place. To our surprise they organised a table alongside the main dining area for us to dine which pleased us to no end (not the only ones there by the way) and as a result we dined.
The meal started with an amuse bouche which was sublime!!! Next was a shellfish consome x2, which was really good (bit cold). Mains were turbot and veal which were lovely but again a bit cold. Desert was mille feuille and a chocholate torte with a mint sorbet. Nice but not amazing.
We had 2 half bottles of wine, first a white Sancerre €35 .......delish!! Next a red pinot Noir €29, not great.
Service overall was flawless.

Although the food was good, it was not the best meal Ive ever eaten, certainly for Michelin star standard. Having had the amuse bouche (oyster in champagne /beurre blanc foam) we were expecting an amazing taste experience but sadly it just fell slightly short.

I think those at the function may have been given priority as most of the options were gone when we ordered, even though we were sitting before they were!

Nice but not enough wow factor. Lunch may have been a better option!
