“A bitter disapointement”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2011

We went to Didier Meril, on the occasion of my birthday (age= top secret!), to discover and test a restaurant we did not know yet. We had been attracted to it by its scenic view (which is really nice, even with a bad weather). The menu seemed also very appealling. But, unfortunately the cook's expertise is not on par. The main dishes were overcooked and the side dishes and entrees had to much seasoning (especially garlic). On the other hand, the service was efficient and friendly, but the cost of the meal (with a good wine, though) was not cheap. As a whole, I have been somewhat disappointed. This place has a few good points but it is not sufficient to offset the cook's lack of expertise. I would hardly recommend this restaurant.

“Excellent food wonderful location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2011

A wonderful restaurant with choices of a cheap menu, a 'menu plaisir', a gastronomic menu & a la carte., All food we had on three separate visits was outstanding as was the service. The service was attentive but relaxed - if you enjoy good food & don't mind paying for it then dine here.

“Very good food and a perfect location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2011

Didier Meril is located just out of the city centre of Dinard on a cliff overlooking a bay and the sea. Try to book a table at the window (seaside), if you can. We booked the same day, so we didn't manage to get a sea view table but we had a very cosy table as well.

The restaurant offers a couple of menus; there's quite some difference in pricing. We had the middle menu and were not disappointed at all. The wine was very good (but expensive) and the food was delicious.

I would most likely return when in Dinard but I would try to have one of the front seaside tables.

“What a disappointment: food and service not up to standard”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2011

We booked this restaurant thinking that it would be a nice venue for a special birthday celebration next year. The location is ideal, overlooking the bay and the decor is contemporary and simple. The menu seemed nice enough and the wine list certainly has some lovely wines, though at a price. We chose the EUR45 menu, which is the middle menu.

We were served amuse-bouches without being told what they were, and had to ask one of the waiters to let us know what it was we were about to eat. One was a bright green macaroon stuffed with mashed mushroom, one was a sweet crust tartlet topped with a savoury ratatouille and the third was a sort of sweet mini fairy cake with a meaty and herby taste. We could not find anything nice to say about these and started to worry about the rest of the meal ! The chef seemed to have an obsession with everything sweet ! This did not bode well for the next courses. We were right to be anxious as the starters we chose proved to be bland and uninteresting for two of them and extremely sweet for the third one (a lobster gazpacho which was so sweet that it was inedible ! Quite disgusting in fact. So much so that we asked the waiter whether that sweet taste was "normal". He said that it wasn't, took it away and came back a few minutes later with another plate of gazpacho which looked completely different from the first one and he proceeded to tell us that there had been a mixed up in the kitchen with the sugar !!!!!). There should not have been any sugar in the gazpacho in the first place so we were puzzled by that explanation, to say the least.
Our main courses looked nice enough but were lacking in flavour. Due to the fact that there didn't seem to be enough staff on duty, we ended up having to serve our drinks ourselves. This is the sort of restaurant that prides itself in the efficiency and quality of its staff but we felt that the staff just couldn't be bothered with their guests and certainly did not try hard enough.
The desserts were also very disappointed, though here again they looked very pretty. It seems that form prevails over substance in this restaurant. A real shame that they cannot reconcile both. We left the place feeling shocked at the poor meal we had just had and the poor service we had received, all for a rather expensive price. To conclude our evening, we paid the bill, my husband leaving a substantial tip (he cannot help himself, even when the meal or the service aren't' up to standard) and found ourselves leaving the restaurant without anyone being there to bid us farewell !!!! Unbelievable but true !
If you cannot stand pretentiousness and would rather simple quality ingredients prepared with flair, rather than with spoonfuls of sugar, do not eat there. Just like us, you are likely to be disappointed.

“Truly memorable, a must”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2011

On a journey alone through Normandy and Brittant last summer, I chose to dine here on the basis of wonderful reviews in the usual travel guidebooks. It was a meal that will remain in my memory for years to come. The setting is spectacular, in a dining room with high windows, set in an inn, perched above a cove on the northern coast of france, with superb views of the water, the beaches and the sunset. The tables are set beautifully, and the service was attentive, professional and friendly. The food was gourmet French cuisine, with an emphasis on seafood and fish. The local oysters are great. The rosé champagne just right. Every dish was beautifully prepapred and presented, a feast for the eyes and the palate. My only regret was being there alone. Such a romantic (with a partner), wonderful dining experience. I'll be back!
