“Astounding!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

This is a must see if you are anywhere near Carnac. There are a number of fields containing the upright stones scattered about the area. There is a visitors center adjacent to several fields and this is a good place to get oriented and start exploring. There is a small tourist "train" that will take you around the area but we found this to be not worth the price. You can achieve the same thing with a car, a map, and a brochure. If the menhirs (stones) fascinate you, be sure to visit the Locmariaquer site (nice although small museum with a very informative film in either English or French) and the Prehistoric Museum in the center of the town of Carnac.

“Very impressive and extensive standing stones”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

This site is equally if not more impressive than stonehenge with fields of standing stones that stretch to the horizon. Definitely a must do visit when in this area. You should note that the fields with the standing stones are fenced off with no entry in high season unless you go on a paid tour which only happen at certain times. Do not panic however, as we found that getting close to the standing stones was not necessary, as you get a very good view by walking around the boundary, especially by going up the road to the farm which sits at the one end (off from the roadabout where the car park is situated). In some ways fencing it off is better, as you can get photos of the lines of stones without having people cluttering up your shots.

“Surprised”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

We were surprised to see all these numerous menhirs fenced in. After a while, it didn't seem to be special as there were several fields of them.

We especially liked going by foot to the Tumulus St-Michel (There is a parking nearby if you prefer to drive), which consists of a natural rise in the ground (the tumulus), with a chapel dedicated to St. Michel on top of it. The view from up there was quite beautiful.

Near the Giant of Manio, there is a sign for "Fetan an Eutru" which leads to an isolated pond covered with bright green moss. Some monument graces its presence, as well as an otter that didn't mind our presence.

These last two attractions seemed to be the best part of these surroundings, at least to us.

“Personal tour of Carnac and St Just stone alignments”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

Back in August we were privelaged to have been part of a small group tour, led by Afootinfrance, that took us around Brittany, and in particular, took us to see Carnac and St Just stone alignments. For me it was a real 'wow' moment. To be able to walk up to the stones and touch them was very special.

“Embrace your inner pagan.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

Carnac's stones inspire awe and wonder. Spread over 3 main sites of over 100 acres, about 3000 menhirs (upright stones) are lined up in row after row. This 6,500 year old Megalithic site is linked to key sacred events in the Neolithic period, but details remain a mystery.
The Visitor Centre is located at the first site, Menec, and you can either take the tourist train for 7 euros which gives you a good overview of the three sites or take a guided personal tour at the Menec site. Or you can simply walk around the Menec site which is fenced off, but some of the largest menhirs are outside the fence so you have a chance to clamp yourself to one and get a Megalithic surge of pagan power.
