“Fantastic location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013 via mobile

We enjoyed our stay here and all three rooms where clean and modern. Two of our rooms had a fantastic view periguex as they were at the front of the hotel. The only problem was that one room smelt of smoke and did do for the whole of our stay. Apart from that we had a lovely stay. The region is beautiful.

We booked our room online so it was a little cheaper than the advertised price, and we found it great value for money. The staff were very keen to help us have a good holiday, and some spoke excellent English, while the rest were willing to struggle with our pathetic French. The location over the main square with a view of the cathedral spire was a treat. Room amenities were great but we would have welcomed a bar fridge to support my penchant for G & Ts when we returned to our room.

Room Tip: Overlooking the square is preferable to a view of the car park, and the noise is not a problem.

For the price (155Euro/200 USD),in the City Center, this could have been an incredible hotel.

However the pricey "Privilege Rooms" are located beneath the mansard roof on the 4th floor. There "could have been" spectacular views over Perigueux from the room. However...the window/door is similar to the gun-ports/arrow windows of 14th C castle keeps. The 3 m area beyond the door is barred, and consists of pea gravel and the discarded cigarette butts of smokers in what is claimed to be a non-smoking room. (See attached photos).

This "could have been" a jaw-dropping" view with a more imaginative architect. Instead you are paying a premium price for a dark depressing huge room, with a wonderfully comfortable (spacious) bathroom and bedding, and a prime location-that fails the "Is it worth it test?"

We did look at 3 rooms, and took the privilege room(which we had pre-booked) because it had a mini-fridge to keep food. The other rooms cheaper and smaller (half-sized and basic) ,had normal windows.

The Hotel staff are the typical helpful, mechanical, faceless staff of some other Mercures. We did not bother with the overpriced 15.5E breakfast, although it looked substantial. The hotel provided pay parking at 10E/night and convenient. There is an underground pay-public garage across the street,as well. Hotel is quite easy to find by car (with TomTom GPS), and is on the veritable edge of the warren of alleys that make up Perigeaux's wonderful medieval quarter.

The hotel has been refurbished since my last visit, the rooms now have an up beat feel to them, staff are as good as ever.
This time I chose a mercure privilege room, good size room with all amenities. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the central shopping area and good restaurants.

Let's get to why this didn't get a top rating from me - the decor is late '80's, shows signs of wear and needs updating. Everything else was great. Staff was friendly, accommodating and helpful. Rooms had nice beds and updated bathrooms. Breakfast was excellent. The location is perfect. Right across from a major town square and visible when you drive into town from some distance so easy to find. Rooms are insulated, quiet and the windows open for fresh air. There is a car park behind the hotel with plenty of spaces for 10 euros a night. Right in front of the hotel is an underground city lot for 5 Euros a night and the hotel will add the charges to the bill. Walking about town is convenient with al of the Perigueux sites with 10 minutes. I will be back and will stay here again.

Room Tip: Front facing rooms have great view of the square at night.

The Mercure is what one might expect for a typical business hotel in the city centre. Good secure parking. Very small rooms,no mini-bar. Friendly helpful reception staff.
We enjoyed a good Sunday lunch at La Taula restaurant near the cathedral. Doesn't look much from the outside but it is a quality restaurant.

A good centrally located hotel. A bit on the pricey side but we were looking for somewhere central and as we stayed for 3 nights we wanted some comfort. Breakfast was 15 euros per person, again a bit expensive but we didn't want to spend time looking elsewhere to eat. Parking was also extra at 10 euros per day but the carpark was immediately behind the hotel and access was through a barrier so was safe. There is an alternative public carpark opposite.
Most eateries seem to be closed on Sundays as was most of the town so evening eating was limited.
