“Sustainable & environmental”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

Great value from a sustainable & environmental perspective - 12.50 per head (menu du jour)
The owners have decided to try to source all products very locally and have a great blackboard explaining their philosophy and listing their local suppliers of each food group.
Taking this in conjunction with an honest chef who maintains the integrity of the local produce then the outcome is very pleasing.
Sitting inside is typical French bistro style and outside is very pleasant.
One of the waitresses was very good but the other didn't seem too bothered to be earning a wage. The owners were very friendly and professional.
All in all a good experience.

“Fresh produce, nice atmosphere, good service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

During a week's stay in Pau I have been trying various restaurants, and this is easily the best I have found so far. It's a bistro/brasserie style, nicely done with a good feel about it. Wait staff in uniform, cloth tablecloths and napkins and lots of nice touches throughout. It's not pretentious, but there's attention to detail and a clear effort at having its own style.

The food is made from fresh local produce; the menu is fairly limited (about 3 - 4 choices of each course) with daily specials as well. The presentation is very good, and I found the tastes very pleasing. Dishes are innovative and work well. Main courses are carved / prepared at the table side in the "old style" which is a nice touch. After ordering, I received a small bowl of simple (but delicious) vegetable soup "with our compliments to welcome you to our restaurant". An unusual but very nice touch I thought.

Prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food and the general ambiance. Three courses cost 25 euros, with a few choices costing a little more. The wine "of the month" was a very reasonable 5 euros for a 25 cl pichet, and it was good too! More than I can say about many competing places.

By way of comparison, my meal at "Le Berry", which is another bistro but much more casual and much less pleasant (both ambiance and food quality) came to 46 euros (including a half bottle of wine) while at Le Bistrot à Côté the bill was 36 euros. No question which of the two was MUCH better value.

The restaurant is located within a short walk of the castle, in the old town.

Note that the three photos shown next to the listing here on TA have nothing to do with the restaurant - they seem to be generic pictures of local buildings, but are not of the restaurant at all.

“Great value and atmosphere in the centre of Pau”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2012

This jazzy style bistrot in the heart of old Pau was a recommendation from our B&B host, and, as a native of Bearn and having lived in Pau for the past 20 years we reckoned he knew a thing or two. He was right. My wife and I after a morning traipsing the highways and byways of Pau were more than a bit peckish and Le Bistrot d'a Cote fitted the bill exactly. Once installed at our table we immediately noticed how well patronised it was with local people who included both fonctionaires and a younger more relaxed crowd. The lingua franca was most definitely French, other than us, not a tourist in sight. We ordered the plat de jour which consisted of an onion soup followed by an authentic type pizza named by the chef 'Bistronomique". Next up was a Bearn style pork dish served in a delicious piment and tomato sauce. To finish a tarte aux pommes. This all enjoyed with a glass of local wine. All in all excellent value and for an authentic taste of Pau and the Bearn we would recommend this.
