“Can be very good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

We have eaten here on 5 or 6 occasions and most times it was better than average, but it can be a little hit and miss. The best option is the inclusive Menu du jour, which is very good value for money with an option of a glass of the day's wine at only 3€ per glass.

Right in the center of Bordeaux it is easy to find.

Being in the Grand Theatre the decor is beautiful and is worth a visit just for that.

“opulent grand theatre with a good cafe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

The Grand Theatre is at the junction of some of the loveliest streets in Bordeaux. Even if there is no music on offer, the cafe is vry good, serving excellent light lunches in gilded surroundings.

“Not to be missed when in Bordeaux!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

We arrived in Bordeaux on Thursday afternoon and went immediately to the Grand Theatre thinking there might be a tour. Tours seem to be only on Saturday late afternoon but we inquired about performances and were told that Giselle was on Friday night and there were a couple of seats left. For a mere eur 20 each we got a pair of great seats inside a private box which supposedly had obstructed views but they were perfect.

Be sure to ask if there are seats for anything happening during your visit. The desk attendants are very helpful and they can show you exact seat locations on a computer screen to help you decide.

Do note that restaurants seat late and the performance ends late. If you plan to eat out afterward, have a clear plan and get to the restaurant quickly as they may stop serving at 10.30P.

“Wonderful staircase - unconfortable seats”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

This opera house boasts of the greatest staircase of all Europem opera houses and I fully agree. Inside, however, the seats are really not very comfortable (as is also the case with the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris). The cast of the operas generally consits not necessarily of top stars of the opera business, but often of young singers starting their career, which might also be interesting for the visitor. I have seen quite a "liberal" version of "Rigoletto" where the "libertinage" at the court of the Duke of Mantua was "realistically" presented and a refreshing mise-en-scène of Elisir d'amore set in a fairy tale land where the tenor clad in a satyr costume was singing "una furtiva lagrima" from a tree branch. Ticket prices are still reasonable. If you are in Bordeaux you should not miss a night at the opera!
