“Medoc & St Emilion”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

We did two tours with this group. Both times the mini bus was full, or close to it, but the group size was far better than a large coach sized group.

The St Emilion tour was by far the better of the two. We tasted far more interesting wines from 2 Chateau and a wine shop in St Emilion itself. (From which I have subsequently bought wine.) St Emilion is beautiful and a destination in its own right.

The Medoc tour was somewhat less interesting although it did include a tasting at a large & modern wine display centre which provided a good introduction to the region (not just Medoc). Lunch in Pauillac was good, but being a Sunday there was absolutely nothing else to see in the town. Everything was shut. If you do this tour it would be better to do it not on a Sunday.

We had the same guide on both trips (Emelie from memory) and she was friendly and competent.

Their instructions on their website for a meeting place weren't current. But I've just noticed this has been fixed.

These are good tours, the Chateaux welcome the group (especially Ch Sales where we spent some time drinking and chatting with the wine maker), they are interesting, convenient and much better than driving oneself.

“Ophorus Small Group St Emillion and Pomerol wine tour from Bordeaux”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

We chose this one day tour as part of our holiday with Railbookers and it could also be booked independently.

There were eight of us in the group, with a driver/ guide, which departed from near the Bordeaux tourist office at 10 am. We drove to the first vineyard where we had a short guided tour of the winery and vineyard and a tasting of three wines.

From there we were driven to St Emillion where we had a short guided walk through the village and were left for two hours to choose and buy our lunch. There were plenty of restaurants to choose from and we had a set meal for 15 Euros at a pretty café. We met again at 2.30 for a further tasting of 6 wines at a local wine seller.

From there we drove a short distance to the Pomerol region where we stopped at a chateau for a further tour and tasting of two wines. The chateau was a fairy tale place evocative of the image of the Bordeaux wine making region.

We arrived back in Bordeaux at about 5.30 pm.

The trip is not cheap, costing £78 each but I thought it was good due to the fact that we received a personal service and were able to ask lots of questions. No knowledge of wine was assumed and you could drink all the wine provided or tip it away as you saw fit. I would definitely recommend it for a lovely day out with wine included if you don’t mind spending that bit more money.

“Nice tour with a great guide !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

Bordeaux is a place well known for wine and our tour was pre-booked way before we reached Bordeaux. It was drizzling on the day of the tour but the guide, Obris, reached on time and was friendly. He showed around and taught us plenty of things while on the way to the venue which was about 50 minutes. Upon reaching the Chateaux, there was another guide which showed us around. It was a shame that the vineyard is not on the same area as the Chateaux and we could only managed to go to two Chateaux for wine-tasting. Overall experience was good.

“Enjoyable experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

My partner and I recently went on a full day wine tour to the Medoc region. We found the trip to be very interesting. At the two chateaus and one modern winery we visited someone explained how they make their wine and we felt we learned a lot about wine and the making of wine. We were lucky enough to be there at harvesting time. We were able to watch while the trucks laden with grapes came into the winery and saw the machines and people at work during the intitial process of de-stemming, sorting and crushing. We would thoroughly recommend this tour to anyone interested in tasting good wine and learning about the production process. If you want to go to many wineries and just taste wine this is not the tour for you.
Only down side was the lunch time. We were dropped off at a venue across the road from two restautrants and everyone on the tour wandered around trying to find the best place to eat and by chance all ended up at the same place, a cafe/wine bar. Most shops were closed and the restaurants that were open were fairly pricey. I think Ophorous should arrange lunch at one of these restaurants for the group to avoid the confusion. We would have been happy with a salad roll but could not find a shop selling them.
After we got back in the van our guide told us she had bought a sandwich but she had not given us the information about where to buy something simple like that.

“From Bordeaux to St. Emilion......”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

This tour was excellent...our guide, Alain, was most knowlegeable. He was prompt, courteous, and extremely personable. It was a totally delightful afternoon and when we returned to our ship and heard about the ship's tour.....we were doubly pleased with our choice to book this tour.
